Hello CMS Families,
Beginning of Semester 2
Welcome to the first week of semester two! Every student gets to begin again with new electives and another chance to do their best. Please remember that Mt. Time remains the single best way for students to get extra help, retake tests, and meet with teachers. Students can sign up for Mt. Time through the StudentVue app for a week at a time, so please ask them to show you how on their iPads.
If you're looking for a way to monitor if and when your student is turning in assignments on time, consider becoming a Canvas Observer. Here is a link to our website for directions. If you already have a ParentVue account, becoming a Canvas Observer can be just another tool to help families be in the know about their student's school habits.
Sources of Strength
On Monday, Feb. 3, our Sources of Strength student team presented a lesson to the entire school through advisory classes. Students participated in an activity where they identified the sources of strength in their own lives. Check out their combined effort in the pictures below!
Snow is Here
While most of us love to see the white stuff coming down, we really appreciate your patience in the pick up line as things seem to grind to a halt in the afternoons. We do not allow students outside at lunch when there is snow on the black top, and do our best to let them run in the gym after they have eaten. Don't forget to sign up for text alerts about inclement weather if you'd like to stay in the know. Register for BL Connect, the district's emergency alert system, at this link: bls.fyi/blconnect
Thank you,
Kristy Knoll

Create a Family Tech Plan
One way to help your student balance the screen time and media in their lives is to make a family tech plan.
You can use one of these Family Tech Planners to spark a conversation about boundaries and expectations.
Ask your student questions to help them think critically about technology use and media. Create a plan together.
Sample Questions to Ask:
How will we stay safe online?
What other activities will we do to balance screen time?
How will we limit our screen time?
To learn more about how to use technology safely, attend a SafetyNet: Smart Cyber Choices® workshop. KIDS Center offers multiple SafetyNet® workshops a year, including virtual options. These workshops are free and cover hackers and scams, cyberbullying, social media, online gaming, inappropriate posts, and online predators. Click here to learn more or sign up for a training.
Limit screentime on student iPads
For parents who want to make sure their students are not spending an excessive amount of time on their iPads while at home, follow these easy steps:

High school readiness for 8th graders
With second semester upon us, 8th graders and their families are thinking about next year and the move to high school.
In late February, Cascade counselors Amy Mick and Michelle Beaudreau will be visiting social studies classes to practice building a four-year plan for high school. They will be playing with the high school course catalogs and building schedules via a program called Schoolinks. This will be practice for Forecasting in March when high school counselors visit Cascade and help 8th graders build their actual schedules for freshmen year.
On March 3, all 8th graders will participate in Fly Up Day. During this field trip, students will visit the high school they will attend next year, either their home school or the school they have been approved to attend via the Choice Lottery or an Area Change Request. The high schools put on great tours of their campuses and give incoming students hands-on experiences in classrooms.
Picking up your student? Here are some helpful hints
Does your student have an appointment that will require them to be picked up from school? The best way to arrange that is through our attendance office, at least two hours ahead of time.
You can email cascade-attendance@bend.k12.or.us with the name of your student and the time they need to be excused. You also can call our attendance office directly at (541) 355-7110. We do get a large volume of calls to that line, so you might get the voicemail. PLEASE LEAVE A MESSAGE. Messages are checked frequently, and will count as a notification.
Is your student not feeling well and will miss the entire day? An email or call to the attendance office is the best way to let us know.
