New Format for the News & Notes!
For those of you who have been associated with the high school for years, you'll notice our new look to the News & Notes. The News & Notes are meant to include brief highlights of upcoming events and important information about our school. If you have any questions about the content of the notes, please don't hesitate to reach out to the high school office at (717) 885-1270 or contact Dr. Ellis directly at bellis@yssd.org.
Back to School Night
Wednesday, September 4, 2024 (6:00-8:00 PM) - We will be hosting our traditional back to school night at the high school. Like last year, we will be hosting the night with a drop-in format. Parents can walk around the building, dropping in to briefly speak with teachers. This year, there will not be any scheduled formal whole-group presentations in the auditorium. The entire time is dedicated to parents having the opportunity to touch-base with their students' teachers.
We will have maps of the building and a list of teacher rooms available when parents arrive. Parents are encouraged to check Infinite Campus for their students' schedules or ask their student for a list of their teachers. Any parent, who is unable to get their student's schedule, can check in the office for a copy.

Arrival/Dismissal - Dropping-off & Picking Up Students
To everyone who drops their children off in the morning, or picks them up in the afternoon, we always use the front of the building closest to Hollywood Drive for that purpose. Additionally, we ask that all drop-off and pick-up is done in a single line on the parking-lot side. We try to keep the underpass clear for two purposes: accessibility of emergency vehicles and transportation vans, as well as to assist with the merging of traffic after pick-up.
2024 Robert L. Dovey Academic Awards
Each spring, we recognize our students who earned the highest level of Academic Achievement for the current school year. Students are recognized for awards based upon their performance by academic content area, improvement from the prior school year, as well as for reaching Distinguished Honors (3.8 GPA or Higher) or Exceptional Honors (4.0 GPA or Higher). The students earning the honors are invited to participate in a ceremony in the spring of each year.
Last spring, we had an error in our system that prompted numerous students to be recognized at the wrong tier, or not recognized at all. Those students were:
Dashiell Bedell, Amara Burggraaf, Isabella Camacho, Matteo Caputo, Grace Connolly, Nathan Efiom-Ekaha, Austin Fry, Sean Garver, Justus Hortman, Neil Ingole, Austin Kefauver, Cindy Kieru, Danica Landolt-Huse, Nico Makowski, Natalie Martin, Meridith Medlock, Brynn Neidigh, Attikus Peterson, Natalie Pinto, Samantha Potter, Rowen Reed, Juliana Renda, Reed Sanders, Addison Shiflet, Alisha Siddiqui, Esmeralda Velasquez Luiz Martins, Valentina Viola, Aivleen Walsh, Bella Weaver, & Sophia Wile.
We updated the listing of the award winners and it can be viewed here. We look forward to celebrating the 2024-25 academic accomplishments on May 7, 2025!
Junior Achievement STEM Summit
We are pleased to partner with Junior Achievement (JA) of Central PA to host their STEM Summit program for our sophomores on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. The program is designed to expose students to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) careers while also engaging in fun STEM-related activities. While JA always does a great job of soliciting volunteers from local businesses, they can always use additional volunteers to make the day go as well as possible for our students. You don't need to have a STEM background to assist. If you are interested and available, please consider volunteering through Junior Achievement. You can learn more about the program and what happens as a volunteer via this link.
If you are unable to volunteer this time, but would like to help in the future, we will need volunteers for the JA REAL Life program on April 1, 2025 and for our Mock Interview Day on April 9, 2025. More information about volunteering for those dates will be coming out closer to those dates.

Getting Involved: Student Clubs and Organizations
The high school offers a diverse number of opportunities for students to get involved and to explore their interests beyond the classroom. We have 9 different performance organizations, we offer 16 different athletic programs, 19 different clubs, and 11 different honor societies. Additionally, the club list often grows through the years as students propose new organizations. Students can review the list of organizations on the school website and they can stay informed about upcoming meetings and related information on the student announcements page.
