OCEAN Expectations: Kindness
At OCEAN, one of our school expectations is being kind. Take some time at home to discuss how your student has demonstrated kindness at school.
Some ideas for how students can show kindness at school:
Helping Others: Offering to help a classmate who is struggling with their schoolwork or picking up their dropped items.
Using Polite Language: Saying “please,” “thank you,” and “excuse me” when interacting with others.
Listening Attentively: Paying attention when someone is speaking and responding in a thoughtful way.
Encouragement: Complimenting a peer's effort or work and cheering on classmates during activities.
Showing Empathy: Understanding and supporting a classmate who is upset or going through a tough time.
Respecting Differences: Being accepting of others’ opinions, cultures, and interests, even if they differ from your own.
When students demonstrate kindness staff can acknowledge them with an otter ticket. When students struggle with practicing kindness, staff will remind them of the expectation, model kindness, and may ask them if they are ready to apologize or repair if someone was impacted by their unkind action. If a behavior is repeated or severe a student may be referred to the office for more support from the principal or school counselor.
