SMS Weekly Update

What's Happening This Week:
Spring Parent/Teacher Conferences will be the evening of March 12th and all day on the 13th. Every grade level has a Teaching Team who will be focusing on students they have concerns for. These teams will be emailing parents and guardians with a link to sign up for a conference time. If you did not receive an email that is because the teachers do not have concerns for your student at this time. If you would like to request a conference please email your students' teacher that you'd like to meet with. You can find staff email addresses here:https://sultansdwa.sites.thrillshare.com/o/sms/staff. There is also the option to message them directly in Canvas.
PTSO will be putting on a Book Fair during conferences next week. Book Fair will be open during these times:
March 12th from 3pm-8pm
March 13th from 9am-8pm
Come support our SMS Library by purchasing a book at our book fair!
Please welcome our new Superintendent, Dr. Chris Granger!
Parents and Guardians, use your Canvas Parent Account to see which assignments your student might be missing and send messages directly to your students' teachers. We also offer Homework Club on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school for any student who would like help with their classwork. Please don't hesitate to reach out for help accessing your Canvas or PowerSchool Account at 360-793-9850.

Book Fair
Dear Families,
Get ready—the Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school! This is a great opportunity to connect
with your child over the thrill of bringing home new books to dive into again and again. Studies show
that kids read more when they choose books for themselves. A love of independent reading boosts
academic success, plus children who read more frequently also report improved mental health.
The Book Fair will be on the stage in the commons during conferences:
March 12th from 3pm-8pm
March 13th from 9am-8pm
Come support our SMS Library! You do not need to have a conference to come check out our book fair!
There’s even more info on our school’s Book Fair homepage:
https://www.scholastic.com/bf/sultanmiddleschool
While you’re there, set up a Book Fair eWallet, the digital payment account that allows your child to
shop for books at the Fair without cash. Then share your eWallet link so friends and family can add funds.
When you fund an eWallet, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to a giving initiative called
Share the Fair™. Your contributions directly support our students who need help buying books
from the Fair.
Many of us still remember the rush of finding the perfect book at a Scholastic Book Fair. I hope you'll join your child at our school’s Fair and share a reading experience they’ll remember forever.
Happy reading,
Brett Chapple

💡 Policy Reminders
Attendance Rules
Students need to be in attendance the entire school day to be eligible to attend a school dance or after-school athletic event (games or practices).
Excused Absences:
Students shall be permitted to make up all assignments missed due to an excused absence except in participation-type classes where a student’s grade may be affected because of the type of activity missed. Students are responsible for getting missed assignments from their teachers when students have excused absences. Students have the same number of days to submit work for credit as the number of days they were absent. This is for excused absences only.
Excused absences are: • Illness, health condition, family emergency; • Participation in school-approved activity; • Absence excused by the attendance office through pre-arranged parental request (form in office); • Absence resulting from disciplinary actions or short-term suspension. • Absences of five or more consecutive days, due to illness, must come with a doctor’s note excusing those specific days.
Please inquire with the attendance office for more information or clarification, if needed.
After five excused absences within a 30-day period or ten excused absences within a school year, the school will schedule a conference with the guardian of the student identifying barriers to attendance and offering supports and resources to assist. RCW 28A.225.018
After fifteen excused absences within a school year, District Policy requires a conference to be held with the guardian/student to establish an academic plan and attendance requirements. Each absence after fifteen absences will be considered unexcused without principal approval.
Unexcused Absences:
Unexcused absences are absences with or without approval of the parent, but not sanctioned by school law/district policy. Students will be required to make up any work missed during the student’s absence. Examples of unexcused absences are: • Needed at home • Shopping • Haircuts • Missing the bus • Leaving school without signing out • Job interviews • Overslept/parent overslept • Became ill and went home or stayed in restroom instead of reporting to office.
