Boise School District's Career Technical Education (CTE) Program
What is Career Technical Education?
Career Technical Education (CTE) prepares students for careers and postsecondary education by providing academic, leadership, and technical skills. CTE programs are guided by industry partners, hands-on, and allow students to explore different career fields.
In Boise Schools, CTE programs are provided at all junior highs, high schools, and at the Dennis Technical Education Center (DTEC). Students in CTE programs have the opportunity to earn industry certifications and/or college credits, and participate in Career Technical Student Organizations, apprenticeships, job shadows, internships, and more!
Program Areas Include:
- Business and Marketing Education (BME)
- Engineering and Technology Education (ETE)
- Family Consumer Science (FCS)
- Health Professions and Public Safety (HPPS)
- Individualized Occupational Training (IOT)
- Natural Resources (AFNR)
- Trades and Industry (TI)
Graduated Student Success!
Annie - Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
CTE Classes Taken:
10th grade: Fundamentals of Health Professions
11th grade: Emergency Medical Technician
12th grade: Emergency Medical Technician Clinical Education/Intern
Current Employment:
EMT at Acute Rescue & Transport and as a EMT Reserve at Ada County Paramedics
Annie works on Basic Life Support, Advanced Life Support, and Critical Care crews. From interfacility transports to 911 calls, Annie responds to emergencies with care and expertise. Within her role, she also provides mutual aid to larger agencies such as Life Flight and Ada County Paramedics.
Annie started with Acute Rescue & Transport as a student in Mr. Ward's EMT class in a ride along opportunity. As an intern, Annie rode along once per week during the school year and twice per week during the summer. Once she turned 18, she tested, earned her license, and became employed by Acute Rescue & Transport.
Annie was recently accepted into the Ada County Paramedics Reserve as an EMT as well!
Annie's Influence and Impact Statewide:
Annie became involved with the EMS Sustainability Task Force in the writing of a bill to deem EMS an essential service in Idaho, generating much needed funding to develop EMS agencies into more sustainable, better equipped, functional systems. Her new interest in government has allowed her to make connections within the EMS industry and deepen her appreciation for her work.
Annie's Staying Involved: Annie states, "EMS is an incredibly difficult thing to prepare someone for. Mr. Ward did an amazing job of making it clear that your patients won't be straight out of the textbook. It's going to be interesting, incredibly weird, and tough at times. The best thing about the DTEC EMT class is Mr. Ward. He has cultivated an amazing program balancing hands-on and classroom learning. I hope I can inspire students and continuously be involved in the EMT classes this year and for many years to come! I have the best job in the world!"

Dental Assistant Students Give Back to Community
Students from the Dental Assistant program at Dennis Technical Education Center recently stepped out of the classroom and into a real-world experience, volunteering at the Love Heals Dental Clinic. The day-long event gave them a chance to serve alongside local dentists, providing much-needed care to hundreds of members of our community.
Throughout the day, these students assisted dental professionals with a variety of tasks, gaining invaluable hands-on experience. The students played a key role in supporting the dental clinic by preparing instruments used in procedures and observed how a dental clinic operates, including all that is involved in supporting patients and their care. This experience not only allowed them to give back to their community but also provided a unique opportunity to learn the skills and knowledge needed to excel in their future careers.
For many of these students, volunteering at the clinic is an important step toward their goals of working in the medical field. By shadowing dental professionals, they gained practical insight and experience that will help them as they pursue careers as dental assistants, hygienists, or even dentists.
The Love Heals Dental Clinic served as a meaningful event for both the community members receiving care and the students who contributed their time and passion. Their efforts reflect the best of what the Boise School District and Dennis Technical Education Center strive to achieve: providing students with impactful learning opportunities while fostering a spirit of service and community care.
These future dental professionals left the clinic not only with new skills and confidence but also with the knowledge that they made a difference in the lives of those around them. Watch the following video to learn more.
Junior High Program Spotlight
Family and Consumer Sciences at Hillside Junior High
Mrs. Anderson’s Family and Consumer Science (FCS) program, including Young Living, Teen Living 1 and Teen Living 2, at Hillside Junior High School allows students to develop a variety of life skills including mastering basic measurements for food production, safe food handling procedures, kitchen safety, and budgeting. The skills taught at Hillside’s FCS program align with the high school FCS programs.
Highlights of the Program:
Mrs. Anderson has a variety of projects for all abilities and interests in her classroom. One of her students' favorite projects include the Ramen Challenge, in which students are provided a package of Ramen Noodles and 3 additional ingredients and must create a new and exciting Ramen dish to share with their classmates. This lesson allows the student to utilize measurement skills taught in prior lessons while providing flexibility and creativity for student learning.
How do parents/guardians and industry partners get involved in this class?
Parents/guardians are always welcome in Mrs. Anderson’s class and can help in a variety of ways. Guest speakers are a great resource for students to learn about careers in the community while partnering with local industry leaders. In addition, an extra set of eyes are always nice to have in the classroom when conducting kitchen and sewing labs to ensure student safety and procedures are followed.
Check out what two students had to say about their class below.

Individualized Occupational Training Prepares Students for Interview Success
Partnering with learning coaches across the District, students enrolled in Individualized Occupational Training (IOT) successfully completed their 1st quarter resume unit with mock interviews conducted by the coaches. The unit focused on the professional skills for writing and revising resumes; planning and researching interview skills; and using those skills to complete and interview. Students gained valuable skills needed to secure a job or advance in their career.
After the unit, students shared:
"It has better prepared me for a future of job interviews and bettered my understanding on what employers are looking for in an interview."
"Updating my resume and practicing an interview has prepared me to know what kind of questions I should look for in future career job interviews. I learned what I'm good at and what things I should work on. Knowing how to be ready for an interview and having a good resume helps get possible career opportunities."
"I think I know how to answer questions better now and what to really describe about myself."
