Guildford West Public School
NEWSLETTER - 2024, Term 4, Week 5
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a busy start to the term and we are already half way! At the beginning of the term, four of our Stage 3 students and Mr Robinson attended the Royal visit at Parramatta Park. At this visit they represented our school with pride and were even able to meet King Charles and Queen Camilla and shake their hands. This was a very special moment in history and one which our students will remember for the rest of their lives.
In other exciting news, we had ten students represent our school at the Sydney West Athletics Carnival. After placing at this carnival, Favour, Te Arahe and Mariam went on to the PSSA athletics carnival. Mariam has now progressed to the next round and will proudly represent NSW at the Australian Sports Championships. Congratulations to all these students and Miss Clement who has supported them through this process.
It has been lovely this week seeing all of our Year 6 students busily preparing food for their Year 6 High Tea which they celebrated with their families and friends. While enjoying the beautiful food, students and families were able to celebrate and share memories from their time in primary school.

Support Unit News
S Katoomba had a busy start to the term by working hard to complete learning activities. During writing lessons, we have been learning to write narratives. Students have worked collaboratively to write a class book by sharing their ideas with each other and co-constructing a story. We are excited to receive our book that will be printed by Little Scribe.
Every Friday morning, students in S Katoomba and S Tamworth have been participating in Stage 2 sport with their peers from mainstream classes. Students selected a sport that they enjoy participating in and have been learning the skills of this sport. Some examples of these sports include gymnastics, cycling and circus skills.
This term, students have been engaging in the Footsteps dance sessions. During these lessons they copy a sequence of movements in time to the music. Each week they have been practising a choreographed dance routine. Students are looking forward to performing the dance in front of an audience later on in the term.
Early Stage 1 News
Our Kindy students have had a very busy start to Term 4!
Kindergarten students have been getting a green thumb with weekly gardening visits. Students have been picking vegetables and herbs to use in their kitchen lesson. We have picked many different vegetables and herbs such as: spring onions, lettuce, tomatoes, parsley, mint, thyme, basil, coriander and oregano. Students have enjoyed chopping up these different vegetables and herbs to make their delicious healthy pizzas!
Kindergarteners have been participating in weekly Life Skills lessons this term. Each week, students learn about a new value such as honesty, respect, and being a team player. While learning the important values, students participate in yoga poses that help them stay mindful about their bodies and promote relaxation. These physical activities allow them to relax, and recharge. We have been using this program during class time to teach students about self-awareness, managing emotions, and understanding the importance of empathy as part of our Health unit.
Stage 1 News
Stage 1 students have launched into Term 4 with excitement and hands-on learning! We started in the garden, harvesting fresh herbs and vegetables for our cooking adventure. Our cooking lesson was packed with fun as students discovered the variety of pizzas and a bit of history behind this favorite dish. Then, it was time to roll up our sleeves in the kitchen to create delicious cheese and za'atar pizzas. What a fantastic experience, filled with new skills, flavors, and lots of smiles!
Students in Stage 1 have been actively engaged in our Life Skills lessons, where they’re exploring important values like respect, honesty, and teamwork. Students are learning how to apply these values in their daily lives, building a strong foundation for positive interactions. To support focus and concentration, we also practice meditation and other self-regulation strategies, helping everyone feel centred and ready to learn.
Stage 2 News
Poetry
In English this term, Stage 2 has been exploring their poetry skills to learn about different styles of poems. Students have been engaged in rich and dynamic processes that enhance their language skills and emotional expression. By exploring various poetic forms, techniques, and themes, they develop a deeper appreciation for language and its rhythmic qualities. Writing poetry encourages creativity, allowing students to articulate their thoughts and feelings in unique ways, fostering both personal reflection and connection with others. Also, studying established poets' works introduces students to diverse perspectives and cultural contexts, enriching their understanding of the world. Poetry is a powerful tool for self-discovery and communication, empowering students to find their voices and share their stories.
Little Scribe books
Stage 2 have also been working on Little Scribes books where they have used their imagination to construct a hybrid animal and write interesting facts about it. Students hybrid books about animals embarked on an exciting journey that cultivated their research, writing, and creative skills. They have had so much fun designing their book on canva. Stay tuned for a very special copy coming home later this term.
Stage 3 News
Camp
Our Stage 3 students kicked off the term with an exciting bang! They had an exciting adventure at the Great Aussie Bush Camp! Our Year 5 and 6 students enjoyed a range of fun activities that made the trip unforgettable! Students got muddy and had a blast during the mud run, splashing and sliding through the fun course. They also challenged themselves on the high ropes, learning to balance as they climbed high in the trees. Students also had a fantastic time exploring the sand dunes, running and playing in the soft sand. They enjoyed swimming at the beach, splashing in the waves and soaking up the sun. We want to say a big thank you to the teachers and staff who organised this wonderful trip and to the parents for their support!
Hilltop Road STEM Excursion
Stage 3 students were selected to go to Hilltop Road Public School to engage in a fun STEM day. Companies across NSW provided an opportunity for students to learn about STEM and how it can be used in everyday life. This included seeing a robotic dog controlled by AI, using Adobe Photostop AI and collaborating with others to complete problem solving tasks.
