Legislative Update | Lewisville ISD
September 14, 2023
LISD Stakeholders,
Though the results of the 88th Legislative Session were disappointing for Texas public school districts, we are still working hard to advocate on behalf of the students and staff here at LISD. Keep reading to learn more about these efforts, and how you can get involved.
Response to TEA Accountability System Changes
This week myself and several Board members penned a letter on the topic of the Texas Education Agency's new accountability system for Texas public schools. While Lewisville ISD believes strongly in accountability, we're one of many other districts across the state who have concerns about several key elements of this system such as changing College and Career Readiness expectations, inaccurate graduation rates, over-reliance on test scores and more.
We hope that you'll read the whole letter by clicking the button below, and join us in advocating for a pause to the current changes being made by TEA to the accountability system.
Resolution Regarding School Funding
We also shared a resolution with our elected officials that asks the legislature to support an increase to the Basic Allotment and address the unfunded mandates placed on Texas public schools in the event that a Legislative Special Session related to Educational Choice and Educational Savings Accounts/Vouchers is called. This action would reject diversion of taxpayer dollars to private entities who are not required to comply with Texas Education Code, ensuring transparency and accountability.
In-Person Meeting Opportunities for Elected Officials
We believe that it is important to bring our elected officials into our classrooms for a firsthand look at the exceptional work of our students and staff. Today we invited elected officials to visit our campuses and to join myself and Chief Financial Officer Paige Meloni for an in-person session on School Finance. Read more about these events and additional updates by viewing our most-recent message to elected officials.
As always, we're grateful for your support of LISD.
