Do your students struggle with their facts? Do they make ‘silly’ mistakes because they don’t understand the numbers? Want more knowledge on how to help them? Then join this one day workshop to engage in activities to understand the importance of number sense, learn why basic facts are so important and how to teach them, and leave with a list of games to provide your students with an opportunity to practice!

  • Fact Fluency supports Iowa Core through work in Procedural Skill and Fluency as well as promoting Distributed Practice that is meaningful and purposeful.

    • Fact Fluency is a sequence of facts instruction to best promote strategy development

  • Number Sense supports Iowa Core by helping students build a familiarity with the language of numbers in order to be flexible, accurate, and efficient.

    • Number Sense is the foundational understanding that helps students be flexible with their thinking, understand the relationship between numbers, and better realize when an answer is not reasonable.

Students must be able to know the answers to basic fact expressions to free working memory and have number sense to find the patterns for the more complicated mathematical tasks.

Course Objectives

Course participants will:

  1. Participants will develop an understanding of foundational facts for each operation.

  2. Participants will learn a sequence of facts instruction to best promote strategy development.
