October Edition
Channelview's Mission
Setting high standards for academic excellence, integrity, leadership and responsible citizenship.
Principal Message
Dear Channelview High School Parents and Guardians,
As we move into the month of October this school year, I want to share some important updates and reminders to ensure we continue on a path of success.
Reinforcing the Dress Code:
Maintaining a respectful and distraction-free learning environment is vital for student success. This month, we are reinforcing our dress code policy to ensure all students are dressed appropriately for school. We appreciate your support in making sure your child adheres to the dress code each day. A reminder of the dress code can be found on our school website.
Cellphone and Headphones Policy:
To further support an effective learning environment, we are strictly enforcing our cellphone and headphones policy. Students are not permitted to use cellphones or headphones during instructional time. These devices must be kept out of sight during class to minimize distractions and maximize learning opportunities. We ask for your cooperation in reminding your child of this policy and ensuring they understand the importance of staying focused during class.
Attendance and Punctuality:
Regular attendance is key to your child’s academic success. We remind all parents to ensure their children arrive at school on time and attend all classes. Attendance is monitored closely, and we ask for your cooperation in making sure your child is present and ready to learn every day.
Parent Conference Day: October 10th
On parent conference day our teachers will be scheduling meetings with you. They will prioritize students that need a conference. You are more than welcome to reach out to your teacher to see if they can schedule you in on October 10th or any other day! Get informed
Student Fees:
As previously communicated students are getting charged fees for getting new IDs or getting tights or shirts when they can't meet dress code expectations. Please log in through our skyward account to see if your child owes any fees. You are able to pay online or in person.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership as we strive for excellence in all that we do.
Sincerely,
Mr. Cruz
Principal

Attendance Matters
Every Minute Counts
Absences excused by law
Although perfect attendance is the goal, it is not always possible. School districts are required to excuse a student's absence for reasons listed in state law, such as but not limited to:
1. Observe a religious holy day
2. Attend a required court appearance with a subpoena
3. Attend a health care provider appointment
4. Religious holidays
5. School activities
6. Citizenship and Immigration appointments with approved documentation form Department of Homeland Security/U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
Absences excused by district
Channelview ISD has its own criteria for determining what is considered an excused absence. Generally, a parental note may qualify as excused in cases of:
1. Personal illness
2. Death of an immediate family member
3. Extenuating circumstances (case by case)
Channelview ISD allows 10 parent notes for the school year excused (this includes full day or partial day absences). Parent notes must include:
1. The date of absence,
2. First & last name of student,
3. Detailed explanation,
4. Parent or guardian phone number and signature.
Accumulation of Unexcused absences
After too many unexcused absences, the school is required to notify the parent. An “Attendance Matters” letter is sent after three (3) absences. A "Attendance Notification" letter is sent after seven (7) absences, and a "Compulsory Attendance Notification" is sent to the parent if a student has 10 or more days or parts of days within a six-month period or three days or parts of days during a four-week period. Notice it says "parts of days." This means that leaving school early, or arriving excessively late in the day, even if the child attended for some of the day, may count as an absence.
Compulsory Attendance (The 90 percent rule)
Regular school attendance is essential for a student to make the most of his or her education. State law requires children to attend school each day that instruction is provided. The law applies to children ages 6-19. If you voluntarily enroll your child in prekindergarten or kindergarten before age 6, school attendance laws apply to your child, too.
In addition to compulsory attendance law, districts are required to enforce the 90 percent rule, which states that students in grades K-12 must attend class for 90 percent of the time it is offered to receive credit or a final grade. The 90 percent rule applies to all absences, including excused absences.
The Channelview ISD Student Handbook explains your school's guidelines on absences, tardies, and making up missed schoolwork.
