WHPE Update October, 2021
"Reach Everyone"
Greetings,
The weather is still summer-like, without the humidity, but the calendar has turned a page to October. Schools have been in session for a month or more, cooler weather will be coming, and the WHPE Convention is getting closer.
Registration and Reservation
If you haven’t registered for convention yet, now is a good time. The deadline for Early Bird registration has been extended, as indicated below in the WHPE Convention section. Also, the deadline for making a reservation at the Kalahari is coming up next week. A link for this is also in the convention section.
Health and Safety
As excited as we are to be together again for convention, our number one priority is everyone’s health and safety. We may not be able to ensure physical distancing in all breakout sessions. So, we kindly request convention attendees wear masks for the health and safety of everyone. To help promote this request, all attendees will receive a WHPE/Skatetime mask as part of their convention materials when they check in.
Make Lemonade
Having to wear a mask could be viewed as a “real downer” for convention. But when the world gives you lemons, make lemonade. Even though we will be wearing masks, we’re still going to have a great convention. Check out some of the highlights below. Great sessions and great events every day!
Hope to see you later this month.
Dan Timm
WHPE President
Reach Everyone
WHPE Convention
October 27-29 are the dates for this year’s in-person WHPE Convention at the Kalahari Resorts and Conventions in Wisconsin Dells. You can register for the convention at http://whpe.us/whpe-annual-convention. Because of the technical issues associated with online registration the last few weeks, Early Bird registration has been extended to next Tuesday, October 5. You can also renew your membership at the above link.
Tuesday, October 5 is the deadline for making a room reservation at the Kalahari. Go to https://book.passkey.com/event/50175363/owner/49796246/home to make your reservation now.
The Kalahari has been working hard to ensure a safe environment for all its visitors, including WHPE Convention attendees. See what they are doing to ensure you have a healthy stay https://www.kalahariresorts.com/what-we-are-doing-to-ensure-a-safe-getaway/?__cf_chl_jschl_tk__=pmd_eM1u80RPeJ5FBR8pendK6NVCvAxF34hjjskNZQYxI9o-1633031909-0-gqNtZGzNAfujcnBszQsl
A top-notch lineup of speakers will be headlining the convention. Scott Todnem, 2019 SHAPE America National Health Teacher-of-the-Year will be the Keynote Speaker during Thursday’s General Assembly. Karen Fish, 2015 SHAPE America Midwest District Young Professional Physical Education Teacher-of-the-Year will be a Featured Speaker. Additionally, WHPE’s own Shannon Maly, 2021 SHAPE America National High School Physical Education Teacher-of-the-Year and Allisha Blanchette, 2020 Midwest District Health Teacher-of-the-Year, will be presenting. All told, the 2021 convention will feature 10 individuals who have received SHAPE America national and/or district teacher-of-the-year recognition.
In other sessions, Stephanie Morris, Chief Executive Officer, and Brett Fuller, Past President, of SHAPE America will discuss initiatives at the national organization. Closer to home, Penny Kroening, WHPE Executive Director, Tacara Lovings, DPI Health Education and Physical Education Consultant, and Brett Fuller will present on the new Wisconsin Physical Education Standards.
Come Wednesday night and start the convention off by joining us for the All Convention Social, 8:00-10:00. Stick around for something new on Friday and finish the convention with the TOY Extravaganza which will feature Wisconsin Teachers-of-the-Year in health, physical education, and adapted physical education.
Board of Directors Election
Several positions on the Board of Directors are up for election this year – President-Elect, Secretary, and the five District Coordinator positions. Thank you to the individuals running for these positions and volunteering their time to serve on the Board of Directors and provide guidance to WHPE. A paper ballot for the election was included in the Fall Newsletter and electronic voting will be available in October. Please cast your vote in this year’s election.
Health.Moves.Minds./Game-On
Could you use some additional funds for your program? Have you given thought to doing some fund raising? WHPE can help through Health.Moves.Minds or Game-On. WHPE Treasurer Katie Mulloy, katie.mulloy@nbexcellence.org, would be happy to answer questions you have and help you sort through the process of organizing fund raising for your school. You can also attend fund raising sessions at the WHPE Convention to learn more about Health.Moves.Minds. and Game-On.
