Bridport Community Newletter

February 16, 2025
Week 23
Happy Sunday, BCS!
We had a phenomenal week at Bridport filled with joyful learning, time outside and persevering through challenges. We are so lucky to spend time together as a community of learners each day, and many amazing things happen each day here.
Some highlights this week were:
1. Building forts and tunnels at recess
2. Practicing problem solving skills in guidance class
3. Spreading kindness on Valentine's Day with cards and goodies
4. Playing duck, duck, goose while we waited for the busses on Early Release Day
5. Working together as a whole school during community time to reflect and grow.
Look for a signup coming home soon from your child's teacher for spring parent/teacher conferences. We can't wait to share all the growth your child(ren) have made this year!
Best,
Jenny
Things to Know at BCS
School-wide Rules & Routines
Here at BCS we are constantly reviewing and reminding ourselves and our students of our school rules, routines and expectations. We follow Responsive Classroom as a framework for creating safe, respectful and fun school communities.
At the heart of the Responsive Classroom approach lies a core belief: In order to be successful in and out of school, students need to learn a set of social and emotional competencies — cooperation, assertiveness, responsibility, empathy, and self-control—and a set of academic competencies — academic mindset, perseverance, learning strategies, and academic behaviors.
And, with all things- there will be times where the rules may get broken, or a challenging moment comes up. At Bridport, we take these moments as learning opportunities and help students recognize their actions and work to repair any harm that was caused. We believe that this approach helps all children learn and grow in a safe, respectful way.
You may begin to see "repair" checklists come home when bumps happen through the day. We hope that by students sharing how they overcame a tricky moment, we strengthen the bond between home and school.
If you have any questions, please reach out!
February's All School Read Aloud
Separate is Never Equal: Sylvia Mendez & Her Family’s Fight for Desegregation by Duncan Tonatiuh
Almost 10 years before Brown vs. Board of Education, Sylvia Mendez and her parents helped end school segregation in California. An American citizen of Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage who spoke and wrote perfect English, Mendez was denied enrollment to a “Whites only” school. Her parents took action by organizing the Hispanic community and filing a lawsuit in federal district court. Their success eventually brought an end to the era of segregated education in California.
