BS vs. BSCHEM

There are two different majors/pathways offered by the UGA Chem Department. Each is designed for students seeking different professional paths after graduation.

Within the department, we call these degrees:

  • BSCHEM = ACS
  • BS = non-ACS

ACS stands for the American Chemical Society, which is the accreditor of the UGA Chemistry Department.

Students in the BSCHEM major are certified by the American Chemical Society upon graduation. These students are typically planning to be professional chemists and/or attend graduate school for chemistry, so the courses required for the BSCHEM degree meet the needs required for this path.

Students pursuing the BS, or the "non-ACS" major, are typically interested in a professional healthcare career such as medicine, dentistry, or the allied health professions. This major provides more flexibility and opportunity to take courses needed for these professional programs such as anatomy, genetics, etc.

Major Differences:

BSCHEM:

  • Math through MATH 2270 (Calc III)
  • CHEM 3211 and 3212 (Physical Chemistry I and II)
  • CHEM 3511 and 3512 (Experimental Methods I and II)
  • 3 credit hours of undergraduate research required (CHEM 4960R, etc.)
  • Franklin Requirements: Only Multicultural is required (all Franklin requirements must be completed if students double major in second Franklin major, ie Psychology)

BS - Chemistry:

  • Math through MATH 2260 (Calc II)
  • CHEM 3110 (Physical Chemistry)
  • CHEM 3511 (Experimental Methods I)
  • Undergraduate research not required, but strongly encouraged
  • All Franklin Requirements must be completed

Pre-Requisite Breakdown

Both Chemistry degrees contain "hidden" pre-requisites that are not visible via a glance at DegreeWorks. Let's break down what they are and why we take them!

  • MATH 2260 Calculus II - Calc II is a mandatory pre-requisite for both PHYS 1212 and CHEM 3110/3211&3212
  • MATH 2270 Calculus III - Only for BSCHEM Majors! Calc III is a mandatory pre-requisite for CHEM 3212
  • PHYS 1211 & 1212 - Mandatory pre-reqs for CHEM 3211 & 3212 (ACS requirements)
  • PHYS 1111 & 1112 - Will suffice as pre-reqs ONLY for CHEM 3110 (non-ACS requirement)
  • CHEM 2300 & 2300L - Quantitative Analytical Chemistry is a very important course that fulfills pre-requisites for almost all upper division CHEM courses.

Graduation Requirements

All students are required to complete the following requirements to graduate from the University of Georgia.

  • 120 credit hours total - Students must graduate with a minimum of 120 credit hours. Almost all students finish with many more than this amount!
  • 39 credit hours of upper division coursework - All students must meet this minimum to graduate. An upper division course is anything with a course number that begins with 3 or above. For example, CHEM 3300 is an upper division course. The chemistry major requirements do not equal 39 credit hours. To fulfill this, many students will purse a minor or take upper division general electives. Research credit hours also contribute to this requirement.
  • Cultural Diversity, Environmental Awareness, Federal & Georgia Constitution, and US & GA History requirements - These requirements should be fulfilled by courses you need for core requirements. There are also exemption exams for Federal & Georgia and US & GA History.
  • Experiential Learning - This requirement can be fulfilled by many different things. Within the department, we offer Undergraduate Research and being a Chemistry Learning Assistant. Outside of the department, there are internships, study abroad opportunities, and service learning courses that can be used to fulfill Exp. Learning. See all options for Experiential Learning here.
  • Physical Education - 1 credit hour of any PEDB course is required for degree completion. This 1 credit hour does NOT count toward the aforementioned 120 total amount of credit hours requirement.

How do I register for undergraduate research?

After you have worked with a research professor to secure a spot in a research lab for an upcoming semester, start the process for registration by filling out the research approval link.

Form Link: https://bit.ly/3uAqfkW

Once you fill out the form, it will be sent for approval to your research professor, as well as Dr. Phillips, the undergraduate coordinator. Once all approvals are given, you'll receive an email with your specific research course CRN from Ms. Terri Tillman.

You may choose your own credit hours for research and manipulate them in Athena using the PDF form below.

***This process must be followed each and every semester you register for undergraduate research***

General breakdown of credit hours....

  • 1 hour of credit = 3 hours/week of research
  • 2 hours of credit = 6 hours/week of research
  • 3 hours of credit = 9 hours/week of research
  • 4 hours of credit = 12 hours/week of research
  • 5 hours of credit = 15 hours/week of research
  • 6 hours of credit = 18 hours/week of research

What do I submit for my CHEM 4960/70/80/90R course?

What you submit is totally up to you and your research professor! Most students will submit a PPT presentation, a paper explaining the research you worked on, or a scientific poster.

Whatever you submit to your professor, you need also submit to Dr. Phillips by the last day of the semester (Reading Day). Submit to Dr. Phillips at plp@uga.edu!

CURO Research Scholarships

Each year the CURO Research Award provides 500 scholarships of $1,000 each to outstanding undergraduate students across campus to actively participate in faculty-mentored research in any discipline.

Because of the scholarship nature of the award, students must be registered for a course (CHEM 4960/70/80/90R) during the semester in which they receive the award. Receiving a CURO Research Award qualifies for Experiential Learning credit if you present at the spring CURO Symposium.

Deadlines

  • SUMMER – due by April 15

Important details

  • CURO Research Awards are one-semester scholarships (fall, spring, or summer).
  • You must be registered for a course in the semester in which you receive the award.
  • You may register for CURO course credit for your research, but it is not required.
  • You may conduct research with faculty members outside of your department, college, or school, if it is beneficial for your program of study.
  • You can receive the award more than once.
  • All award recipients are expected to present their research at the spring CURO Symposium.
