PRINCIPAL CORNER
Dear OSES Families
The recent event in Georgia was tragic. Over the past few years, the State of Florida has implemented many safe harbors to ensure schools are being kept safe. One of the tools that was used to quickly notify law enforcement in GA was a mobile alert application, also a requirement of Florida. Other examples of requirements include requiring a school officer on campus, practicing drills, and incorporating a notification system called Fortify.
If you are keeping up with local news, you may have noticed an uptick in school lockdowns. Many calls and information comes through the aforementioned tipline Fortify. Fortify’s message is simple: if you see something, say something.
Given all these new guidelines and requirements, I feel our school is safer than ever. I write all of this to get to this point: please make sure your student understands these safety tools, but also understands the potential consequences of abusing them. Today, no threat to a school is taken lightly, even if it was the result of a poor choice in words used by the student.
Safety begins with each individual taking responsibility for their actions and looking out for the well-being of others.

THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
Bradley
This week students have been practicing their letter sounds independently and in small group using our letter sound matching game. Students have also begun blending 2 letter sounds to begin decoding words.
In writing students are learning that a sentence always begins with an uppercase letter and ends with a period.
In math students have just concluded their unit on identifying, writing, and counting numbers to 10 and are ready to take their first math assessment!
FIRST
Vancol
First Grade had a busy week this week! We learned about Patriots Day and wrote special letters to our local community helpers and our own community helpers, Ms. Osborne and Officer Henry. In Science, we finished Topic 1 and started learning about states of matter. Ms. DiNuzzo's and Mrs. Vancol's classes experimented first with creating a gas from a liquid and solid and next applied their knowledge to the question of "which substance makes ice melt the quickest?" Come see all of the amazing STEAM projects the grades are doing at our STEAM night on September 26. Also, don't forget the Cereal Box Project is due the next day on September 27. If you need a cereal box, let your teacher know and we will be sure you get one! We are excited to see all of the creativity of our readers!
Congratulations to the following students from Ms. DiNuzzo’s class that received their XtraMath certificate in Addition: Atharv, Lynx, and Aaradhya
SECOND
Ben Rhoma
In second grade this week, we are learning how to activate our growth mindset when things get difficult. We are focused on being well rested, eating healthy, and doing our best on the FAST tests that we have Wednesday and Friday. The class is practicing reading aloud to each other using expression. In math, we are busy using fact patterns to complete equations and adding two numbers in different orders to get the same sum. Students are collaborating in Science and brainstorming ideas. Students are investigating, collecting evidence, and making claims. They love it! Although it is a short week, we are accomplishing many things!
THIRD
Patsilevas
In ELA, we have been hard at work this week identifying story elements and theme through fiction texts. Students have been strengthening their writing skills by identifying and correcting simple sentences, compound sentences, using conjunctions, and rewriting run on sentences. In Math, we are becoming multiplication mathematicians! In Science, students were able to participate in hands on activities measuring the volume of objects using a graduated cylinder. We also got to measure the mass of objects using a balance beam.
The deadline for the class t-shirt order is September 20th.

We’re thrilled to share some fantastic news and celebrate the remarkable achievements of our students who did an amazing job in participating in our FAST TEST conducted last September 9 for ELA and September 10 for MATH.
Your dedication and hard work have not gone unnoticed. Each of you has demonstrated exceptional skill and commitment, and we your fourth graders teachers couldn’t be prouder. Keep striving for excellence and pushing your limits!
FIFTH

At the beginning of the week, we will be doing FAST Testing and stretching our brain muscles! After testing we will have some fun being creative by creating Squish Mallows with their own stories behind them and advertisements for a pet hotel! At the end of our week, we will be finishing up our unit on inventors and their inventions! The skills that we will be working on are author’s perspective in nonfiction and character’s perspective in fiction.
SPECIALS
McAdams Physical Education
Marathon kids running program has begun! We are off to a great start. Each student has a personalized QR card that gets scanned after each lap. This program keeps track of their daily laps and overall mileage. At the beginning of each class, they have the opportunity to walk or run for 10 minutes. If they run a mile in class that day, there picture will be featured in the Friday newsletter. The end of the year goal is to complete a marathon, which is 26.2 miles!!
For this week's class activity, we have been working on volleyball skills: learning correct hand positions, while practicing bumping and setting.
SIXTH
Cardoso- Math
In math class, we have been learning about understanding rational numbers. We learned what a rational number is and interpreted, compared, and translated rational numbers. We used number lines to help us with this. We sorted numbers in order from least to greatest. In the next unit, we will learn about the operations of integers.
Bravo- Spanish
Students picked a Spanish Speaking Country to do research and a PPT about it (Due on 10/4). They started their PPT‘s this week. They also had their first assessment of the semester about ABC’s and numbers. Our next test will be about a SSC Map on 10/27.
This Friday is the last day to enroll to our Costa Rica trip (June 2025) with the discount.
