Ready, Set, Learn!
September 3, 2020
As our students gear up for a new school year, our staff has been back at it for the last two weeks! It's been wonderful to connect with our colleagues, even if it's all been done virtually. Our team has been focused on mastering all the digital tools they'll be using to connect with and to educate our students. And, we've been diving in to find new ways to support our students and families as we embark on our Connected At-Home Learning model.
As a reminder, we are unable to return to in-person learning until COVID cases decline significantly. Therefore, all students will be learning at home for now, connecting with teachers and peers through live remote instruction and applied learning opportunities. This is a change from the distance learning model we offered in the spring, when we were given just a week to prepare to teach remotely.
Recently, Oregon Governor Kate Brown said that if the current COVID infection rate continues, it could be 200 days before we can return to our classrooms. We are certainly hoping cases decline and we'll return to in-person learning before then. We're prepared to continue Continued At-Home Learning until we are permitted to return to our schools. We're monitoring all of the metrics we must meet before we can launch a hybrid model of learning. You can keep up with the state's data through this link.
Communication is more critical than ever as we teach and learn from home. Please be sure to communicate directly with your teachers and support staff to ensure your student is getting the help they need. It's going to take all of us, collaborating and communicating, to ensure a successful school year.
I know you're eager to get the school year started. Our new learning model may present some initial challenges, but we are excited about the opportunities it will also present. Our dedicated staff is preparing for a year of care and connection, and a year of academic growth for every learner. We look forward to your partnership in this process.
I'll continue to provide these updates to you monthly, or more frequently as situations warrant. Your school will be in direct communication with you on a regular basis. As always, if there is anything I can do to help support you, please don't hesitate to let me know. Please be sure to read through this newsletter for important information about the new school year.
Here's to a new school year! It's one we didn't anticipate, but one we'll navigate together. I'm proud to be of service to the students and families of the Canby School District.
Best regards,
Trip Goodall
SuperintendentCanby School District
Please take a moment to work with your student to log into their school email using the Gmail app on their iPad. Student usernames are their student’s graduation year, the first five characters of their first name and the first five characters of their last name. A first grade student named Jonathan Lopez, would have the username 32johnalopez. His email address is 32johnalopez@canby.k12.or.us. Passwords for all K-3 students are abcd1234; passwords for 4-12 students are randomly generated and can be provided by homeroom or advisory teachers.
We have a new support site for parents in both English and Spanish. You can access the site at www.canby.k12.or.us/support. The site will help students figure out how to add their username to Zoom for their live instruction sessions.
Whether you need technology assistance or help with an assignment in the Connected At-Home Learning model, we are available to walk you through it.
In addition, individual teachers will have office hours to support students and each school will offer a support hotline or email where students and parents can direct their questions. Your school will be sharing their after-hours support plans with you in the coming days. The information is also available on our new support site: www.canby.k12.or.us/support.
Students are receiving instructions on how to connect with their classes on the first day of school, Tuesday, September 8. If you still have questions, contact your teacher directly. Students will be engaged in their learning from 8:45am-2pm (K-8) or 9am-3pm (9-12).
Most live sessions will be recorded and made available so that parents and students can access the content as their schedule allows. Our staff will check in with students who are unable to participate in live instruction to ensure they have the support they need to access their learning.
We are happy to have the opportunity to provide an online learning environment for students that prefer this option. The Canby Online Learning Academy is not a separate school and all students will have support from their neighborhood school. Their workday is more flexible and follows a recommended pace to complete work on time.
Counseling support and connections with your student's assigned school are available in this learning model. We hope you engaged in your schools' Meet and Greet (Carus Elementary is having its event tonight). If you missed it, don't worry, your child's teacher will be reaching out. Keep up to date with check-ins with your COLA teacher and to review school-level communications so you can access the support you need.
For the first week of school, your teachers will be meeting their students, connecting and understanding what level of involvement you would like (for example, do you want your child to participate in small group connections with peers?) and will begin to ease you into the different learning platforms we have available.
FREE MEALS FOR ALL STUDENTS
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR ME?
If you already signed up for meal delivery by filling out the form we sent last week, we will deliver meals directly to your home beginning on September 8. Breakfast and lunch will be delivered between 11:30 and 12:30. We need to know someone is home to accept the delivery (for food safety reasons), which can be left on a doorstep. A wave through the window or porch light flicker can serve as an acknowledgement that someone is home to receive the meals.
WHAT IF I DIDN'T SIGN UP FOR MEAL DELIVERY, BUT WANT MEALS DELIVERED NOW THAT THEY'RE FREE FOR ALL STUDENTS?
We're happy to start delivering meals to your home on Monday, September 14. You just need to fill out this form by Wednesday, September 9, so we can add your home to our delivery route. Meals will be delivered between 11:30 and 12:30.
I'D LIKE TO RECEIVE FREE MEALS FOR MY STUDENT, BUT I DON'T WANT THEM DELIVERED TO MY HOUSE. WHAT SHOULD I DO?
Contact our Nutrition Services department to schedule a meal pick-up appointment at Ackerman School. You can reach Nutrition Services at 503-266-6742.
MY STUDENT IS ENROLLED IN THE CANBY ONLINE LEARNING ACADEMY. CAN WE RECEIVE FREE MEALS?
Families will have the opportunity to pick up meals on a weekly basis. Families can pick up multiple days worth of meals at a time. If you would like to participate in meal pick up, please contact the Nutrition Services department at 503-266-6742.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN FREE MEALS GO AWAY ON DECEMBER 31, 2020?
We must return to our traditional nutrition services model when this program ends in December. While we don't know when we'll return to in-person learning, we're hopeful it will be before this program ends. However, in the event that we must continue Connected At-Home Learning, we'll still be able to deliver meals to families, but they will not be free unless you qualify for Free or Reduced Priced Meals. We recommend you submit an application NOW so there is no disruption to your meal deliveries when this program ends. Please note, more families now qualify for Free or Reduced Priced Meals under Oregon's expanded income guidelines. Learn more and fill out your application here: https://www.ode.state.or.us/apps/FRLApp/?Length=2.
SUPPORTING CHILDREN IN A PANDEMIC
The coronavirus outbreak has changed many things about our daily lives. But even during this uncertain time, it’s a sure thing that our children are still learning, growing, and developing.
Everyone can help support a child’s healthy development (and it may even help relieve your stress!). Just a few minutes and some simple, free activities can make a difference.

While the district will start the year in the Connected At-Home Learning model, the blueprints outline the safety and response protocols for when we can transition to the hybrid in-person learning model.
