Middle School Matters
September 3, 2024
Be Safe. Be Respectful.
Be Responsible. Be Ready to Learn
The Mission of Portsmouth Middle School is to create a strong and safe learning environment: promote social, emotional and physical well-being and to provide opportunities for each student, to the best of their ability, to meet high academic standards, develop responsibility, and achieve the positive social values and behaviors to become productive citizens.
Patriot Pride - From the Coordinators of Student Life
Portsmouth Patriot Pride is a proactive approach, using a school-wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) framework, aimed to create a positive school culture. Based on PMS' Vision, we established our school-wide behavior expectations, focusing on four core values: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Ready to Learn. These expectations are reinforced daily with Patriot Pillars. When a student demonstrates one of the four core values, a Patriot Pillar may be given. Patriot Pillars are collected and we celebrate our success as a school. The goal is to increase our school's ability to establish the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students to be emotionally, socially, and academically successful.
During the first weeks of school, our students will be learning about and practicing our school wide expectations for common areas and within their classrooms. This week, all students at PMS participated in lessons focusing on the expectations in the following areas:
Arrival and Dismissal, Classrooms, Hallways, Cafeteria, Bathroom, Bus
Ask your student if they have earned any Patriot Pillars!
Athletics Tryout/Practice Schedule (students should report to the gym)
Boys and girls soccer tryouts will be on Wednesday, 9/4 and Thursday 9/5 from 3:00-5:00 P.M.
Cross country will start on Wednesday, 9/4 at 2:45 P.M. in the gymnasium
Lunch Procedure change
There is a change to the lunch procedure this school year. This year, students who are looking to purchase a lunch or snack can report to the line to make purchases upon entering the cafeteria. Students do not have to wait to be called up to get in line. There will be adults at the front of the line to assist with the logistics of moving through the line. This is meant to allow for uninterrupted eating time. If students want to leave their seat, they must still raise their hand to request to move about the cafeteria.
5th grade band
Please see the following message regarding 5th grade band from Mrs. Phillips.
Ice Cream Social this Thursday
The PTO is hosting our beginning of the year ice cream social outside in the front of the school from 5:30-7:00 P.M. More details will follow.
Change to the absence notification process
The middle school is aligning with all other district schools by utilizing an online form to report absences from school. The form is linked here for your convenience. It is also on our website.
Student Handbook
The student handbook has been uploaded to our website as well. Here is a link to it. There have been updates to consequences related to suspension. If families or students have any questions regarding the student handbook, please do not hesitate to reach out to a coordinator of student life or the school administration.
