Principal's Message
Happy Friday Nighthawks!
As we wrap up the week, I’d like to remind you that this Monday is a Professional Growth Day, and there will be no school for students.
We also want to take this opportunity to reinforce our commitment to being good neighbors and partners in our community. Recently, concerns have arisen regarding students using the Design39 Campus as a shortcut. Students have been observed walking, biking, and driving through their driveway and parking lot, leading to safety concerns. These incidents include knocking over parking cones, riding bikes in garden areas, and driving at excessive speeds.
Several incidents recently have impacted student safety at Design39, and we kindly ask that you speak with your students about the importance of respecting our neighboring campus and following community expectations.

Everything You Need to Know About HOCO 2024
Del Norte High School ASB proudly presents Homecoming 2024: Surfin’ and Soarin’. This year's dance will be held on the USS Midway, Saturday, October 12, 2024, 7:00-10:00 p.m.
Homecoming spirit week, football game, and parade will FOLLOW the homecoming dance this year, the week of October 14th-18th.

Ticket Prices:
September 16- 22: $45*
September 23-29: $50*
September 30- October 4: $55* (Guest Pass Tickets for Sale)
* $5 Discount with ASB Sticker (ASB discount does not apply to the purchase of a Guest Pass)
Tickets:
Tickets are sold at the Finance Office and Student Store at lunch. Tickets are also available for purchase online at the ASB Web Store under Student Information on Del Norte High School’s website. Tickets will not be sold after lunch on October 4th. Students ID is required to enter the dance; the keepsake ticket students receive at purchase is for informational purposes only.
Tickets are non-transferable. Please do not purchase a ticket from a Del Norte student.
Guest Policy:
All non-Del Norte High School students attending a DNHS dance must have an approved guest pass. Guest passes must be completed and approved before a ticket can be purchased. Students will be notified if the guest pass is not approved by the administration. All guests must be with their DNHS students at the time of check-in. Guests are REQUIRED to have picture identification to enter the dance.
Guest Passes:
Any student inviting a non-DNHS student to the dance will need to complete a Guest Pass application. Middle school students and adults 21 and over may not attend a DNHS Dance. Guest passes are available in the front office. We encourage you to start this process NOW as the deadline for administrative approval is Tuesday, October 1.The number of Guest Passes issued is pending the number of DNHS student tickets sold and event capacity. Guest passes are limited. Click HERE for the application.
Parking:
There is a parking lot next to the USS Midway, Navy Pier, which is managed by ACE. The cost of parking varies between $15 - $25. There is metered parking along Harbor Drive, meters do not require payment after 6:00 p.m.
Dress:
Homecoming is a semi-formal dance. Students are required to wear shoes while at the dance. We are not providing a coat check this year, please be mindful about what items students bring to the dance. Students are responsible for all personal items.
Reminders for the day of the dance:
Students must have a student ID (physical or electronic) to enter the dance. Guests must have a completed guest pass and an ID.
There is no coat check. Please plan to bring only what you can wear/carry.
To prevent injury, all students must wear closed toe shoes while at the dance.
Bags should not exceed 8 inches in size.
No outside food/drinks/liquid allowed in the dance.
Please remember to always be respectful and safe on the dance floor.
The expectation of the USS Midway is that all attendees arrive by 9:15PM.

Instructions for PUSD Webstore:
PUSD has moved to a new district wide Webstore pusd.graystep.com where a family can log in to one account and view all items from the individual schools their students are attending. An account needs to be created before Webstore items can be accessed. Instructions for setting up an account with the new district Webstore can be found on the webstore. If you are a parent creating an account, you must know your students' ID number(s) to add them to your account in order to purchase items from their school. Please note that while processing fees and convenience fees are applied to credit card and Webstore transactions, there are no additional fees for in person purchases paid by cash or check.

Float Building:
Join your class in building this year's homecoming float! Float building will be Monday, October 14th - Thursday, October 17th, from 3:35pm to 8:00pm in the outdoor basketball courts. Come for all or part of the time. Help your class earn participation points and have a great time!

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Del Norte’s parent-teacher conferences are a vital component for a struggling student’s education.
These conferences provide an opportunity for parents/guardians to connect with the teacher and discuss the student’s academic progress, social/emotional development, and overall performance in classes. Please note: Teachers will reach out to families of students they feel need a conference.
Here is what to expect from Del Norte parent-teacher (students should attend) conferences:
- Provide powerful opportunities for students to take ownership and advocate for their own learning.
- Discuss ways to increase academic performance. Opportunity to create an action plan for success.
- Encourage students to think critically about their actions and ways to improve.
- Give the students enough time to adapt and earn a grade they can be proud of.

Data has shown that parent/guardian involvement in a student’s education can lead to better academic outcomes, improved attendance, and higher graduation rates. Our goal is to partner with parents/guardians and students to support learning and achieve desired academic outcomes.

Beyond the Buzzer
As our Fall season sports are at the halfway point of their season, we have lots to be proud of and have high expectations for a great and successful season in Fall sports.
Here are a few highlights from the Varsity teams’ first half of the season.
- Girls Flag Football is off to a 5-4 start in their inaugural season.
- Football is currently 3-2 with a big victory over cross town rival Poway.
- Girls Volleyball is 9-6 winning their last 3 matches and 9 of their last 12.
- Girls Tennis remains UNDEFEATED at 7-0. Great Job Ladies!!!
- Girls Golf is currently 4-3 winning their last 2 competitions.
- Boys & Girls Cross Country are 5-0 in League, and both ranked top 2 in San Diego

Strength & Speed Training: We are very excited about the future of DNHS Athletics, and the opportunities provided for our student athletes to enhance their athletic abilities and skill set. Having professional and certified instructors in both our Strength and Speed programs is such an asset and we are happy to see our student athletes taking advantage of these programs and opportunities. Student Athletes can participate in as many as 4 strength and 4 speed workouts each week. Del Norte All-Access Pass: Show your Nighthawk team spirit and support for Del Norte Athletics by purchasing a Del Norte All-Access pass HERE for only $135! This card admits two immediate family members to all home games that would normally charge for entrance (football, flag football, boys’ & girls’ basketball, boys’ and girls’ volleyball and wrestling). Not valid for tournaments, playoffs and CIF games.

Student Op-Ed by Smyan Khurana 10th grade
This week we´re going to explore how technology affects physical and mental health. The excessive use of the internet has a major impact our well-being. Anxiety, depression, reduced academic performance, and an overall diminished quality of life are significant side effects from being on the internet too much. Internet addiction is a real issue affecting families all over the globe. Some signs of internet addiction include negative mood shifts, loss of time, a decline in academic performance and much more. Setting limits on screen time, and taking regular breaks from technology are great steps to balancing your well-being. Reading, taking a jog or simply getting outside in nature are great ways to help both your body and mind. Have fun and take care Nighthawks!

Did you know that last school year, almost 12% of Del Norte students were chronically absent (missing at least 10% of school days)? That's 18 days of missed school or almost one full month of school (CA Dept. of Ed.)! 18 days of missed opportunities and positive connections with peers, teachers, and instruction. Chronic absence rates reflect all student absences including parent excused or medically excused absences. How can you help improve your student's attendance?
- Minimize missed days by scheduling vacations and out of town absences to only our district recess dates
- Ask our Attendance Techs about OCIS contracts to help your student stay on track academically, if longer absences are unavoidable
- Reach out to your counselor or administrator for individual strategies to improve attendance

Riding a Bike to School
Dear Nighthawk Families,
This is a reminder that if your child rides an ebike to and from our school, they (and one parent/guardian) will be required to attend a PUSD ebike safety class this Fall. The September classes have now passed. If you did not attend one of these classes, additional classes will be scheduled in October (dates TBD). To provide students ample time to comply, this new requirement will be enforced starting January 6, 2025.
You can attend any one of these one-hour classes that work with your and your child’s schedule, regardless of where you are located. Advance Registration is not required. Again, one parent or guardian must attend with their child. At the class, you will be asked to register the make and model of the ebike, VIN#, and student ID, so please come prepared with that information.
We appreciate your partnership in taking this important step toward keeping our students safe.

From the San Diego Police Department Regarding Bike Safety
- Students under 18 years old are REQUIRED by law to wear a helmet when riding a bike, whether you are the driver or passenger.
- The bike must be ridden in the SAME direction as the flow of traffic.
- You may not ride an e bike with fixed pedals or pegs.
- E bikes are NEVER to be ridden on sidewalks.

- Students MUST walk their bikes on campus.
- Please pay close attention to pedestrians and cars.
- Remember to ALWAYS lock your bike in the bike rack. Gates are NOT for locking bikes.
- E bikes are not permitted at any sporting event.
- DO NOT take a bike that is not yours for any reason.

Homelessness or Housing Insecurity Assistance
Dear Poway Unified School District Families
Poway Unified’s Youth in Transition (YIT) program assists children and youth experiencing homelessness with food, transportation, school supplies, and additional support during the school year. Those students who qualify lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence and includes children and youth who are:
- Sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason. This can be doubled (living with one other family) and even tripled (living with two other families) up.
- Living in motels, hotels, due to the lack of alternative adequate accommodations.
- Living in domestic violence shelters, homeless shelters, transitional living programs, housing paid for by programs/vouchers, etc.
- Living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings, or in a public or private place not designed for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings.
- Unaccompanied homeless youth who are living away from the physical custody of a parent or guardian.
- Migratory children who qualify as homeless because they are children who are living in similar circumstances listed above.

Reminders
Del Norte is a CLOSED campus
Remember, Del Norte’s campus is closed during the school day. All students must remain on campus. This also includes the parking lot and vehicles. You must have an approved off-campus pass from the attendance office to leave campus or off role to leave campus prior to 3:35.
Deliveries
At Del Norte we cannot accept items to be picked up or delivered to students during the instructional day in the front office. Please ensure that your Nighthawk has their lunch, phone, homework, clothing, athletic equipment, computer/Chromebook, books, etc. that they need for school before dropping them off.
Office Hours
Office hours for on-campus instruction at Del Norte occur on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, immediately following the second period. We ask that every student finds an academic location and engage in academic work during this time. Teachers may require students to attend based on their academic performance in class. Office hours provide an opportunity for students to receive extra help from teachers, complete missing assignments, and study for upcoming tests. This time is supplemental to regular instructional hours, and students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of it, especially if they need additional support in any subject.
Attendance
Please review the attendance policy on the DNHS website. It is crucial for you to arrive to class on time every day to not miss important information from your teachers. Traffic is going to continue to be busy for the next few days, allow an extra 10-15 minutes to make it through traffic lights, park, AND walk to class. Detentions for tardies will start on September 19th if you have 6 or more tardies or truancies in the first 3 weeks of starting school. If there are barriers to your student arriving to school on time, please refer them to their counselor or administrator for support.

Parking and Dropping Off
Traffic is extremely heavy the first few weeks of school as we welcome back all our Nighthawks to the Nest. Plan accordingly and drive with extra caution as the community settles in. Please be respectful of each other and our neighbors when parking on side streets around campus. On time attendance to classes is critical to student success, please see that your Nighthawk gets to school on time.
If you will be dropping your student off in the front of the school, use the traffic circle off the main school entrance on Nighthawk Lane. Do not enter the staff lot off Nighthawk Lane. The traffic circle gets congested in the morning and immediately after school, so be cautious and patient when dropping off your student.
ADA Accessible Parking on Campus
Attention Nighthawk Families!
It has been brought to the attention of the Administration Team that some of our ADA compliant parking spaces are being used by individuals that are not legally permitted to use them. In an effort to provide access for all, we ask that you not park in our ADA spots unless you are legally permitted to do so. As a reminder, California Penal Code 22507.8 states that illegally using an ADA parking spot can result in a $421 fine. Thanks for you attention to this matter.
