Unit Notes
Unit A
*Reading:* We are wrapping up our fiction unit this week, focusing on story elements emphasizing character traits. We are adding adjectives to our word bank to provide more options for describing feelings such as sad, happy, or mad. Please ask your child to demonstrate the hand motions and share the elements of a story from beginning to end.
*Writing:* We have published our narrative writing stories and are excited to share them with you at the end of the year during our student showcase event.
*Phonics/Fundations:*
Mincke/Triplett: We are learning about digraphs (wh, ch, sh, th, ck). Our high-frequency words for the week are by and do. If you would like handwriting practice for your child at home, please contact Mrs. Mincke or Mrs. Triplett.
Blades/Horn: We have been working on soft /c/, soft/g/, and long vowel patterns. This week's high-frequency words are how, over, under, and find.
*Math:*
Mincke/Triplett: We continue developing independence with addition and subtraction strategies. We have also been learning about measurement and 2-D/3-D shapes.
Blades/Horn: We have been exploring the defining and non-defining attributes of shapes and double-digit addition.
Unit B
- Second grade math: We have started Unit 7. We will work on generating and analyzing data, measurement, and adding with four or more addends. We sent home an option math practice packet reviewing what we learned in Unit 6.
- Third grade math: We are starting Unit 7 which focuses on developing a deeper understanding of fractions. We will compare equal parts of a whole as well as learn about fractions on a number line.
- ELA: We are continuing our study of inventors. Students will research one inventor and make a Keynote presentation.
Unit C
It’s a Friday Folder week. Don’t forget to check the link to your child’s Friday Folder.
Fifth graders will get a visit from the Jeff Middle School counselors on Tuesday.
Graves/Sandstedt math: We are working on line plots and volume. Both of these can be tricky. If you would like extra practice for your student please let us know.
Literacy: Students are excited to be brainstorming topics they would like to research. Their report will be a cause and effect style so they’re looking for topics that will fit that style. They may be coming home asking if you know anyone with expertise in the area they’d like to research. This project will be presented at the Student Showcase in May. IGE projects that have been done independently at home will no longer be expected.
Specialist News
March is always a great month to be a reader, because it’s the time of year when students get to vote on their favorite children’s book! The two state awards in Missouri are the Mark Twain Award (grades 4-6) and Show Me Award (grades 1-3) and the winners are voted on by kids! Our students have been busy all year reading the list of nominees and are voting this week. I have always thought that although there are many awards a book can receive, as an author, one voted on by students (your target audience) is quite a big deal!
When browsing for good books to read, looking for award winning titles is a good place to start. But the Missouri state awards are not the only medals given. Here is a list of some other great literary awards given each year…
Newbery Medal – Awarded by the American Library Association (ALA) to the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
Caldecott Medal – Given to the most distinguished American picture book for children, recognizing excellence in illustration.
Coretta Scott King Award – Honors outstanding African American authors and illustrators whose books reflect the African American experience.
Pura Belpré Award – Recognizes outstanding Latino/Latina authors and illustrators whose work best portrays Latino culture.
Schneider Family Book Award – Given to books that excellently portray the experience of children and teens with disabilities.
Theodor Seuss Geisel Award – Recognizes outstanding books for beginning readers, named after Dr. Seuss.
Hans Christian Andersen Award – An international award given by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) to an author and an illustrator for their lasting contributions to children's literature.
Happy Reading!
