The Silver Laker
October 2022 Edition
Leaves are falling but our excitement is still sky high!
Groundbreaking Ceremony
Positive Office Referrals from last month!!
Cuyahoga Falls City Schools utilizes PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) as a way to focus on the positive behaviors and how to change behaviors by using positive reinforcement. This goes hand-in-hand with our code of conduct that provides discipline procedures for negative behaviors. In wanting to help reinforce the positive behaviors students exhibit, Silver Lake Elementary is using a Positive Student Referral System where staff members can refer a student to the principal but for positive reasons.
Congratulations to the Silver Lakers on their Positive Referral to my office!

CONNOR JEBBER
MRS. FALLON MILLER — SILVER LAKE ELEMENTARY / FIRST GRADE
Mrs. Miller inspired me with a constant positive attitude. Her positivity towards everything really rubbed off on me and led me to have many memorable moments in her class even with it being so long ago.
Mrs. Miller – Thank you for always keeping a positive attitude through everything. Even now I still remember the happiness surrounding your classroom. I still remember friendships made in there along with games we played and more. Your positivity has impacted me through all these years reminding me to keep my head high and look at the bright side of things. Thank you.
How Do You Like Them Apples?
Kindergarten classes combined to learn about apples to celebrate "Apple Day"! We read about an apple orchard, ate apples of different colors, worked on fine motor skills, danced, and graphed our favorite apples! What a fun day :)
1st Graders
The first graders at Silver Lake had a blast on apple day! The students were engaged in many fun learning activities. We started our day off making Johnny Appleseed hats. We read and learned about John Chapman. Each student got to use an apple peeler. We used these apples to make applesauce. Our first graders also learned about the life cycle of apples. They got to taste a green, red and yellow apple. As we tasted our apples we came up with adjectives to describe them. We voted for our favorite apple! We finished the day by reading apple poems. We practiced our handwriting by copying an apple poem onto an apple shaped paper. It was a very busy learning day!
Traffic Reminders
If you are dropping of your students and stop in front of a fire hydrant, please be sure to not leave your vehicle. If you want to leave your vehicle, remember to think about safety and not block a hydrant.
Kdg parents dropping off and picking up their students. Avoid the bus area in the back. The bushes to the fence is the area we need to keep clear. The area in front of the field and after the fence is where we ask parents to park.
We Have The Best Custodial Staff!!
Thank you to Mr. Oscar and Mr. Dan for all you do for our building, staff, and students!!!
Here you can see Mr. Oscar adding some Mums to the property! Can't wait to see the finished product.
Playground Use Outside of School Hours
After school, once students have joined their parents/guardians and are in their care and under their supervision, students may be on the playground sets. Again, this is an issue with supervision and we do not want anything to happen to our little Black Tigers.
Parents with students picking up younger siblings (HS or MS students): please have conversations regarding how they should not be playing on the equipment when our day is still in session. I understand that older students get out earlier but that becomes a disruption to the end of the day here. I appreciate all of you help with this matter.

Silver Lake Staff Spotlight
Meet our 4th Grade Team
Get to know Mrs. Leslie Dougherty
Growing up I didn’t want to be a teacher. Don’t get me wrong I loved school, but I wanted to deliver babies. After taking Honors Chemistry, well, I decided that wasn’t the career for me! I knew my passion was children, so I followed in my Aunt Lana’s footsteps. She was a teacher for 30 years in Bedford, and her love for teaching was contagious. (I even started college at her alma mater, Miami University.) After graduating from college, and a few twists and turns in my teaching career, I found myself teaching in Cuyahoga Falls Schools. I taught gifted students at DeWitt, Lincoln, Newberry, Price, Richardson, and Silver Lake in our Project Excel program for about 20 years. I have been teaching fourth grade reading and science here at Silver Lake for some time now. (I’m old, so I don’t remember the exact number of years.) Hahaha. I truly love teaching, and if your children have ever had me in class I hope that shines through.
In my home life I have a wonderful husband and two daughters. My oldest daughter will be graduating this year from Ohio Northern University with her nursing degree (better her than me) and my youngest daughter will be graduating from Stow Munroe Falls High School. I am an active band parent and can often be found chaperoning or working in the concession stand during the fall marching band season. Since my youngest is a senior, life will be changing quite a bit next year. Empty nesting is on the horizon. Enjoy every minute with your little ones, next thing you know, they are graduating!
Get to know: Mrs. Kelli Staats
Hi! This is my 32nd year of teaching at Silver Lake. I actually student taught in third grade at Silver Lake and graduated from Kent State University that December. Surprisingly the other third grade teacher retired in January so I was hired for the remainder of that year. I have been at Silver Lake School ever since! I taught third grade for 25 years and then moved to fourth grade where I have been teaching for 7 years. I have my Master’s Degree in Education. I teach all the fourth graders the Math and Social Studies content. I am so lucky to be able to have opportunities to work with all the fourth grade students. I continue to love teaching and grateful to work with the Silver Lake Staff! They are by far the most supportive staff members!
When I am not teaching, I am spending time with my husband of 30 years, and our two dogs and cat. We were blessed with three beautiful daughters: twins Alli and Ashley who are 26 and our youngest daughter, Abbey who is 21. Alli is married and teaches ELA at Lorain County Joint Vocational School. Ashley got married September 3rd and is a school counselor at Strongsville Middle School. Abbey is a junior at Bowling Green State University studying International Studies. As empty nesters, we enjoy spending time with friends as well as each other trying new restaurants and attending festivals!
Meet our Intervention Specialists
Get to know: Ms. Miranda Filon
I am that kindergarten student that was young (4), unseen and left behind until I was in 2nd grade. Not the ideal start to education, huh? However, the “I want to be a teacher when I grow up” picture was still created. I succeeded with my career choice even after the struggles I had faced as a child.. I have taught K-5 multiple disabilities, emotional challenges, kindergarten, and first grade. My newest endeavor, K-5 intervention specialist.
I have an amazing family. I have two girls, Ella (10) and Eva (8) that I co-parent with their father. Yes, it’s true, I also have 5 cats!
Get to know: Mrs. Holly Hug
Hi! My name is Holly Hug. I was born and raised in Cuyahoga Falls. I attended Preston, Sill, and I’m a CFHS graduate. This is my 11th year teaching and my 10th year teaching in the district. I’ve taught at Richardson, DeWitt, and I’m proud to be here at Silver Lake! This year, I’m working with the 3rd and 4th graders, but have worked with students kindergarten through 5th grade over the years.
Outside of school, my family keeps me busy! My husband, Kyle, and I have 2 wonderful, fun, and exhausting toddlers, Brantley (3) and Lexi (2). When we’re not spending time together as a family, you can probably find me at a nearby volleyball court- preferably sand volleyball but I do settle for indoor volleyball during the colder months.
Get to know: Mrs. Kaitlynn Biben
Hello! My name is Kaitlynn Biben and this is my first year teaching in the Cuyahoga Falls City school district. Over the past four years I have worked as a 3rd grade teacher, but this year I was given the opportunity to take on fifth grade! I am so excited to get to know our bright and talented fifth graders as the year progresses.
Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my husband (Greg) and my three month old baby boy (Ronan). This summer we spent time together walking out dog (Scrappy) and taking trips to the Columbus and Cleveland zoo.
