2021 Children's and Teen Summer Reading Program Feedback
As you wrap up your SRP, please take a moment to provide feedback about the 2021 SRP by submitting the survey below. This survey is designed to collect feedback about the children's and teen 2021 Summer Reading Program. (Please note that this survey is not for statistics collection). The survey is optional and ALL library staff involved in planning and implementing their library's SRP for youth are invited to share feedback. This survey is anonymous, though there is an option in include your library's 3 letter code. The survey will be open for feedback collection through September 27.
Thank you for sharing your SRP feedback and for helping OLIS determine which supports are needed in the future!
New for SRP 2022: Moving to iREAD
At the conclusion of summer 2021 Rhode Island will be leaving the Collaborative Summer Library Program and adopting the 2022 iREAD Summer Reading Program "Read Beyond the Beaten Path."
iREAD, developed and administered by the Illinois Library Association, offers a summer reading theme, slogan, manual, and graphics program created and curated by youth services librarians. iREAD offers materials for children's, teen, and adult programs and employs four different artists to convey the theme each year. The artwork typically features well known characters from beloved illustrators of picture books and graphic novels. The slogan always includes "library," "read," or "reading" and themes lend themselves to a variety of interpretations and types of programming. iREAD artwork is made available to Beanstack and is used in Beanstack SRP templates.
OLIS will provide public libraries access to the 2022 online manual and will also provide posters and bookmarks for promotional purposes. iREAD offers a catalog of additional materials that libraries may purchase at their own cost. This fall iREAD will offer a virtual webinar to kick off planning for SRP 2022. Additional information about ordering posters/bookmarks and registering for the kick off webinar will be available in September.
RI will be joining Illinois, Iowa, Oregon, Alaska, and California as statewide iREAD partners, as well as all worldwide military base libraries and many individual libraries nationwide. For more information about iREAD visit https://www.ireadprogram.org/ or contact Danielle Margarida.
Apply now: scholarships for Library Journal Fostering an Antiracist Library Culture course
OLIS and RILA are partnering to offer scholarships to folks who work in RI libraries to attend the 3-week Library Journal Fostering an Antiracist Library Culture course on Tuesdays from September 28 – October 12. You can see the class description, schedule and presenters at the Fostering an Antiracist Library Culture course page to see if this is something you are interested in attending.
If you are interested, you can apply here: https://forms.gle/KhWBq8Y16RvniXbY7 . Applications are due by August 20 at 4:00 PM. It’s a very quick application and should only take you about five minutes. The number of scholarships will depend on the how many people are interested – if we have more applicants than slots, we’ll do a random selection to choose who can attend. If you are selected, we’ll handle the registration, etc. You will just need to show up at the class, do the work and commit to sharing what you’ve learned with the RI library community. That might look like sitting on a panel for an OLIS CE session, writing up your experience for the RILA bulletin, or sharing internally with the staff at your institution.

A letter certifying participation is available for those applying the Mock Newbery program towards professional development.

Mock Newbery webpage: http://www.olis.ri.gov/youth/newbery/index.php
We'll also be using the RI Mock Newbery Goodreads Group to discuss each of the titles on the first reading a list. A thread is being created for each title and we'll use the comments from the Goodreads discussions as a springboard for our virtual discussions.
