The Spencer Scoop
Spencer Elementary - November 22, 2024
Office News
REMINDER!
Due to the shortened week, there will be no Spencer Scoop next week. Here's just a friendly reminder that there is NO SCHOOL from Wednesday, November 27th through Monday, December 2nd for Thanksgiving Break. School will resume on Tuesday, December 3rd. We hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving!
A Note from the Principal
Hello Spencer Families,
It is hard to believe that we are this close to the holiday season. We had a full week here at Spencer and have lots of fun things happening in our two days next week. The students will be doing their earned extra recess from the Roadrunner Run, the BHS marching band will be visiting, and we will have our Houses time together on Monday morning.
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and holiday together. Our students and staff have all been working so hard, I am thankful they will all get time to relax and reset over our days off.
I wanted to share how thankful I am for all of our Spencer families, students, and staff. It is such a privilege to work alongside each of you to ensure success for our amazing Roadrunners. I can honestly say that being the principal of this building is my most favorite job I have ever had and I cherish all the hard work, relationships, and experiences that I get to be a part of here.
Love,
Mrs. Boyd
Note from the Attendance Secretary
As we approach the end of the 1st trimester, attendance letters will soon be mailed out to those students who have excessive tardies and absences. Excessive absences = 10% or more of the marking period. Medically excused absences do not count against your student's attendance, so send in those doctor's notes if you have them. If you have any questions regarding your students attendance, feel free to contact Lisa Berry via email at berryl@brightonk12.com.
Remember Your ID at Student Pick Up
Please remember to bring your ID with you EVERY day you come to pick up your student! We frequently have substitute teachers that will not recognize you and will send you back to your vehicle to get your ID before releasing your child to you. This is for the safety and security of your student.
Appropriate Winter Weather Gear
Michigan weather is so unpredictable. It is advisable to check the weather each morning and ensure your student is properly dressed for the elements. We have had some students on the colder days this week come to school without a coat. We did see some snow and colder temperatures this week, and students should be wearing adequate clothing. Coats, hats and gloves are mandatory during winter months and boots are necessary as the playground areas get muddy. If the temperature and/or wind chill is 0°(F) or below, the children will stay inside.

*LOST AND FOUND
Today is the last day to check out the lost and found for unlabeled items! All remaining items will be collected over the weekend and will be washed and donated to a local organization before Thanksgiving. Thank you!
Lost & Found
Spencer Families, the lost and found is overflowing! Please stop by to check for items or have your student take a look. Items with names on them have been being returned to classrooms. But there are many items with no name. All items with no names on them still remaining in the lost and found on November 22nd will be collected over the weekend and donated to a local organization before Thanksgiving. Thanks for your help with getting these items back to their owners!

Counselor's Corner
Hello from your Spencer School Counselor, Mrs. McKiddy! I am absolutely thrilled to have visited so many classrooms again during the month of October. For the month of November, I plan to connect with students in their classes to work on Growth Mindset and Grit! We will talk about this positive way to approach challenges and practice our skills as we learn to continue working through productive struggle. This lesson will include activities to practice and phrases to use to help us grow with the Power of Yet! Thank you for your continued support at home to encourage our young learners with this important life lesson.
Lets Connect: If you are noticing some behaviors that are interfering with your child’s success in the classroom, please feel free to complete my parent referral form and we can work together to determine if supports are needed at school.
More Resources: The Elementary Counseling Team also has the BAS Elementary Counseling (New Updates!) website for ideas and resources to be used at home!

BAS Mental Health & Wellness
As a district, it is our mission to provide a rigorous, meaningful, and well-rounded education that will inspire each student to achieve their personal best. BAS believes that each student and staff member can reach their full potential when challenged to do their best, with an open mind, and with an unwavering commitment to personal growth.
We continue to increase our efforts to support each person's mental health and wellness with resources, time, and experiences. This information and much more can be found on the BAS Wellness & Mental Health website or download the app by typing in Brighton Area Schools on iTunes or Google Play.
Just In Case Clothes
Parents - Please make sure you pack a change of clothes (that are weather appropriate) in your child's backpack EVERY DAY. This is for ALL students, grades JK-4th, you never know when your student may have a nosebleed, or loose a tooth, or spill food/milk on their shirt, or find a mud puddle outside, or have a bathroom accident. If your student keeps a change of clothing in their backpack, then we can take care of it here, otherwise we need you to bring up a change of clothes. Thank you for your cooperation.
