Happy October!
The autumn days are upon us, and the mountains are beginning their vibrant transformation. The crisp air, the warm hues of nature, and the comforting atmosphere that fills our homes make this season truly special. I hope you're enjoying this time as much as I am!
Staff Spotlight
We are spotlighting the dedicated faculty and staff of Long Lake Central School District to celebrate their unwavering commitment to education and their positive impact on our students and community. Their hard work, creativity, and passion inspire excellence and foster a nurturing learning environment, making a lasting difference in the lives of our young learners.
Patrick Agababian
This year marks Mr. Agababian's first at Long Lake CSD. He shared that the most fulfilling part of being a member of the Long Lake faculty is the joy of teaching Physical Education to students across all grade levels.
In his efforts to connect with students, Mr. Agababian asks about them about their favorite music and incorporates those tunes into his PE classes.
In addition to his love for hiking and running, Mr. Agababian enjoys immersing himself in a good book. One of the funniest comments from a student was his wish to be a fire hydrant.
If he could choose any superpower, Mr. Agababian would love the ability to time travel.
Pat Curtin
Mr. Curtin is the math wizard for grades 7-12 at Long Lake CSD! Now in his fifth year, he loves teaching right in his own backyard and gets a kick out of bumping into students outside the classroom.
Mr. Curtin isn’t just about numbers; he spices things up by throwing out quirky questions like, "Can you guess which two organs I’m missing?" Talk about a fun way to connect!
When asked what the funniest thing a student has ever said to him, Mr. Curtin shared that one student remarked, "My dad helped me with my homework, but I’m not certain he’s correct since he went to school in the 1800s."
Mr. Curtin dreams of soaring through the skies with flying as his superpower!
Lynn Zaidan
Mrs. Zaidan, the exceptional Secretary to the Superintendent, is in her fifth year at the school. She finds that her favorite aspect of the job is engaging with all the different types of people throughout the day. Mrs. Zaidan easily connects with the students, as she offers stickers and candy to help them feel at ease.
Her ultimate pastime? Scrolling social media for hilarious cartoons and quotes, fueling her legendary Morning Updates for the rest of the staff.
The funniest gem a student ever tossed her way? "You're the boss!" Talk about a confidence boost!
And if she could snag a superpower, Mrs. Zaidan would choose the ability to chat with animals—just like Dr. Dolittle!

Resources on Supporting the Well-Being of Students
Prioritizing student well-being is essential for fostering a positive and supportive learning environment. When students feel safe, valued, and connected, they are more likely to be engaged in their education, achieve academic success, and develop healthy relationships. By prioritizing their well-being, schools can create a nurturing environment where students can thrive and reach their full potential.
Encouraging Kindness and Confidence
Take a mindful minute! In the chaos of a day’s activities, it’s okay to take a step back with your kids. Just breathe. Try slowly inhaling and exhaling for a few moments. A little bit of silence may also help you and your children feel more centered and energized.
Make gratitude a habit. You can start a daily ritual of talking with your kids about everything for which you’re grateful. Anytime is a good time to be thankful. You can go around the table at mealtime or incorporate it into the nighttime routine.
Kindness starts at home! Encourage your children to use kind words and actions when talking to and playing with each other. When there are disagreements, encourage your kids to try to see things from their sibling’s perspective. This will help them build empathy and have positive social interactions with their siblings and others.
Art is a great way for kids to express themselves. Try drawing, painting, sculpting or crafting with your kids and then ask them to discuss their work. Sometimes, this will be an easier way for children to communicate what they are feeling. Creating art can help lower stress and anxiety too.
Pause before praise. After your children have completed a task, encourage them to reflect upon and verbalize how they feel. Help them learn how to listen to and value their inner voice and to be kind to themselves. Then, chime in with your own reactions.
Do your kids have a favorite dance, craft, game or special talent? Encourage them to teach you something that they love to do. This can help them feel more confident about themselves and can be a fun opportunity for all.
October is...
National Bullying Awareness Month
This is an opportunity to encourage the nation to take action at the local level to create safe and supportive organizations. Bullying is unacceptable and comments or conduct that disparages or demonstrates hostility or aversion should not be tolerated. By being accepting, kind and inclusive, you can help make the world a better place. Together we can create a world without bullying!
Fire Prevention Month
The goal of Fire Prevention Month (and week October 6th - 12th) is to raise fire safety awareness and help protect homes and families. In 1922, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) named the second week of October Fire Prevention Week in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. Today, we celebrate Fire Prevention Week and Month by spreading fire safety awareness and educating families, students and communities across the United States with help from our partners and local fire departments. First Alert is the most trusted brand in fire safety* and is dedicated to 'Protecting Life's Moments' and encourages you to gather your family to discuss fire safety awareness. Enjoy the moments and memories you create with your loved ones with peace of mind knowing you're protected.
