Strategic Plan: Focus on Culture and Community
Mercer School knows it takes a village to raise a child and we are grateful for the partnerships we have in the Mercer Community that support our students. We are also proud of the way our students support and represent our community.
Mercer School Hosts First Annual Earth Day at the Carol Hanneman School Forest
The first annual Earth Day event at the school forest was a huge success. Kudos to our 7th and 8th grade Woods and Water students who created interpretive signs for the school forest and led groups through the trail. Several community partners were on hand to support student learning in our outdoor classroom. Many thanks to the following organizations for their support:
- Iron County Land and Water Conservation Department
- Iron County Forestry and Parks
- Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources
- The Mercer Public Library
- UW Extension
- The Discovery Center
- Mercer School Art Program
A picture is worth 1,000 words, so check out the photos below of the Earth Day activities.
Mercer School Forest Grand Reopening
Zach Wilson installs the Outdoor Education Center sign that was refurbished by Mercer Art students
Interpretive Signs
Woods and Waters students lead the way as students learn about the deer exclosure from the student interpretive signs. The exclosure allows students to see the difference in the forest when deer are not able to eat the growing plants.
Cedar Trees
Another example of an interpretive sign that will help visitors understand the ecosystems of the Northwoods.
Iron County Forestry
Eric Peterson, Administrator for Iron County Forestry and Parks, was on hand to share information about sustainable forestry practices. Students were able to see the healthy growth of trees that had been milled.
Healthy Trees
Trapper's Cabin
Students peeked into the cabin to get an idea of what a trappers cabin may have looked like.
Yurt
Students warmed up in the school yurt. The Yurt now has a wood stove to help keep warm on cold winter days!
Storytime
Teresa Schmidt from the Mercer Public Library read nature themed stories to students outside the Trapper's Cabin.
Haikus
Joseph Miller from UW Extension Iron County reminded students to use their senses to enjoy the forest. They wrote haiku's based on their experience in the school forest.
Watershed Demo
Zach Wilson, Iron County Conservation Specialist, showed students what happens to the watershed when the land, air or water become polluted.
Creatures of the Swamp?
Hannah Gargrave, naturalist from the North Lakeland Discovery Center, was on hand to show students the diverse population of animals living in the vernal pool.
How tall is that tree?
Students learned how to estimate the number of logs from a tree using a biltmore stick.
Earth Day Mural
Students expressed their creativity as they painted the Earth Day canvas supplied by Mercer School art teacher Craig Griffin.
Service Project
Students in 7-12 grade wrapped up the day by completing a community service project. If you drive down Martha Lake Road, you might notice it's a bit cleaner along the stretch of road by the school forest!
Reflection
Students in Mrs. Benzel's class completed a writing assignment where they reflected on their experiences in the school froest.
While Earth Day at the School Forest was a great way to bring community together to support our students and have our students engage in a community service project, the day was also filled with authentic learning experiences. From the photos above, you'll notice that students learned about ecosystems, haikus, forest management, math, careers in forestry, and much more, This was a powerful example of how learning doesn't have to happen within the confines of the 4 walls in the classroom. Our classroom is wherever learning happens!
Strategic Plan: Focus on Teaching and Learning
Ensuring Mercer students are engaged in high-quality, personalized learning experiences is one of the strategic priorities identified by the School Board to support our vision and Portrait of a Mercer School Scholar. Read below for examples of how this is coming to life in Mercer School,
Mid-Quarter
May 1st marks the middle of the 4th quarter. Students should check in with teachers to make sure they are all caught up and on track in their studies.
State Testing: Forward Exam and ACT
April 26 marked the end of our state testing window. This year, results from the Forward Exam are expected later than usual as the writing portion of the test was updated. Teachers from across the state will be meeting to review student writing and set cut scores for the test. Data is used by educators to improve instruction for students.
Small School. Big Opportunity.
Strategic Plan: Focus on Developing the Whole Child
Mercer School is about more than academics. We focus on developing the the whole child. We want our students to find joy in learning, be well rounded, and display good citizenship.
Kevin Hines Suicide Prevention Assembly
Butternut students joined us for pizza in the cafeteria followed by a presentation in the gym given by suicide prevention speaker, Kevin Hines. Kevin is a nationally known speaker who shares his powerful story of survival when he attempted to die by suicide by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco when he was 19 years old. Thanks to the Mercer Suicide Prevention Fund for bringing this opportunity to Mercer School. This is one example of how Mercer School supports the well-being of our students.
So many great things are happening at Mercer School, you won't want to miss out!
