DHS Weekly Update
September 20, 2024
Principal's Message
Dear DHS Community,
Today, I want to share a story that truly embodies ONE Dartmouth.
Last week, I received an email from junior student Andrew Moniz that impressed me but did not surprise me. You see, Andrew has a history of kind acts at DHS. He reached out with a simple yet profound request: Andrew wanted to beautify the 9/11 memorial dedicated to DHS alumni, Leah Oliver. Leah was a DHS graduate who tragically lost her life in the World Trade Center on September 11th.
Leah had been working for just two months at Marsh & McLennan in the World Trade Center and she already loved it. She worked as a technical sales consultant position in the firm’s risk management software division mixed two of her passions, working with technology and interacting with people. She was killed that morning, the day before her 25th birthday, when a hijacked airplane struck the World Trade Center that tragic morning 23 years ago.
While a student at DHS she served in student government and played field hockey, softball and basketball at Dartmouth High School. She graduated in 1994. After high school Leah got accepted to Columbia University in New York City, where she graduated in 1998 with an engineering degree.
What began as a request for mulch spread into something truly beautiful. Andrew and his father selflessly donated their Monday afternoon to improve the memorial. Their act of kindness transcended landscaping; it became a touching gesture of remembrance.
Andrew's thoughtfulness has not gone unnoticed. Thank you for exemplifying ONE Dartmouth.
With Pride,
Mr. Shea
The Leah E. Oliver Memorial Scholarship Fund was established after her death to provide scholarships for Dartmouth High School students. Donations may be made to the fund â„… Dartmouth High School, 555 Bakerville Road, Dartmouth MA. 02748.

PSAT Administration
On Thursday, October 24, we will be administering the PSATs to all sophomores and the PSAT/NMSQT to our juniors. The exam will be administered to students digitally using their Chromebooks.
Sophomores benefit as they are provided the opportunity to practice for the SAT exam. The PSAT exam has the same sections and timing as the SAT, and measures the same Reading, Writing, and Math skills students learn in the classroom - the knowledge and skills your child needs to succeed in college and career. In addition to this, when they receive their scores, they will see the areas of strength and areas that they can improve upon before taking the SAT. These scores also assist us in identifying students who have Advanced Placement potential.
Juniors take the PSAT/NMSQT which is the only qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship program, an academic competition for recognition and scholarships conducted by the National Merit Scholarship corporation.
All students have been registered; there is no cost for families as the Dartmouth Public School District has funded this opportunity for our students.
Please stay tuned for further details.
MCAS Information
Please see the MCAS testing schedule for the 2024-2025 school year. Please mark your calendars now. All sophomores will take the ELA and Math MCAS; freshmen take the Biology in June.
It is so important that our students are here to take the MCAS as it is a graduation requirement, and we want our students to shine as they demonstrate what they have learned!
Advanced Placement Information
Students who are enrolled in an Advanced Placement course(s) will have until October 31st to make a level change. This is the case because exams are ordered through the College Board, and the December 1st Course Level change deadline is after the exam order is placed.
Just a note, exams are ordered for ALL AP students as the expectation is that students take the exam. If a student needs financial assistance, please reach out to rachelchavier@dartmouthschools.org; no student should be unable to take the exam(s) due to financial hardship.
On September 18th during PASE, AP students attended a mandatory AP assembly which shared all pertinent AP course and exam information. Please see the presentation that was shared below.

Tales From the Classroom
Ms. Dickinson's Digital Photography Class
Students in Ms. Dickinson's Digital Photography class found examples of symmetrical and asymmetrical balance on the campus of DHS.
Ms. Lassey's and Ms. Johnson's Sophomore ELA Class
Students in Ms. Lassey's and Ms. Johnson's Sophomore English Class read Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin. Students annotated the first page of the short story as a class and then worked independently and in groups. Students worked so diligently during this lesson!
PTO Corner
The DHS PTO would like to welcome back all of our new and returning students and families, teachers, administration, and all staff for the 2024-2025 school year!
What we do...
The DHS PTO raises money for senior scholarships AND for teacher mini-grants to enrich student learning and supplement classroom needs that are not covered by the budget. Last year we were able to provide $2500 in scholarships and an additional $2500 for teacher mini-grants! We have purchased items for many current teachers in the past! An escape game for the library teacher, supporting half of the Shakespearean play that came for the entire school in recent years, furniture and lighting in the Dartmouth TV production room, and much more! We also like to spoil our amazing DHS staff during Teacher Appreciation Week.
Here are the PTO meeting dates for the 2024-2025 School Year below. All meetings are on Thursdays at 6:00 pm in the LMC (Library Media Center); we aim to keep our meeting to about 1 hour. Please join us and bring your ideas! See you there!
