Monday, January 20th is Martin Luther King Jr. Day (All facilities closed)
Dear LWSH Families and Caregivers,
Greetings LWSH Families, Caregivers, and Scholars,
Happy New Year! Hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season with loved ones and remained in good spirits. The holidays represent a great time to take a break from the first half of the school year, with the new year bringing an opportunity to reflect on the first half and get ready for the second!
As we move into the second semester, I would like to reminder everyone that all scholars are currently on a 3-week break and scholars, including grades 11 and 12 are to return to the Main Campus on Monday, January 13th for a whole-campus day. The MetroHealth site will be closed. However, the main office will open on Monday, January 8th for parent visitation and phone calls during our normal business hours of 8:00am - 12:00pm and 1:00pm - 4:00pm.
In the meantime, here are several things our scholars and families need to be aware of as we move into the second marking period:
On-Track for Graduation:
When students return, they will be entering our 3rd quarter and the beginning of our second semester. We are always monitoring progress for on-track to graduation for every one of our scholars to ensure they reach the graduation stage at the end of their 4-year high school journey. Therefore, it is imperative that everyone, including our scholars and families, monitor, intervene, and act to ensure your child is on-track for graduation. The Ohio Graduation Requirements are listed below:
- Course Completion Students will satisfy Ohio’s curriculum requirements and any additional local requirements. Students will complete the state minimum 20 units, with specific units required in each content area. If a student does not pass a high school course, they are given credit recovery beginning in the 10th grade here at LWSH. Every scholar in grades 10-12 who have credit recovery have it during the first period of the school day. If they DO NOT complete the credit recovery, they will NOT be on-track for graduation. To ensure this is done, scholars who have credit recovery should be in school daily and on time to make it to their credit recovery courses.
- Demonstrating Competency Students will demonstrate competency in the foundational areas of English language arts and mathematics or through alternative demonstrations, which include College Credit Plus, career-focused activities, their ACT or SAT scores, or military enlistment. We encourage scholars in grades 10-12 to continue to sit for the scheduled OST exams to take the opportunity to reach a competency score of 684 or higher to meet this graduation expectation. Every LWSH scholar has access to IXL to help them gain the foundational skills need to pass the exam. IXL is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week and can be used to practice at home or at school. Our after-school College Now Winter Impact program for test preparation begins Monday, January 13th and ends on March 7th. This is also a great opportunity for scholars to get 1 on 1 tutoring and earn cash while doing it! The flyer for this program is below.
- Demonstrating Readiness (Seals) Students will demonstrate readiness for their post-high school paths by earning two diploma seals that allow them to demonstrate important foundational and well-rounded academic and technical knowledge, professional skills, and leadership and reasoning skills. State law created 12 diploma seals for students to demonstrate academic, technical and professional readiness for careers, college, the military or self-sustaining professions. Each seal allows students to demonstrate knowledge and skills essential for future success in their chosen post-high school paths. Students will demonstrate readiness by earning at least two diploma seals, one of which must be state-defined.
By having our scholars and families understand these requirements and working with their scholars to help them understand, it will allow you to work with your child and with the school to ensure your scholar gets on and/or stays on track and will be ready for graduation.
Cell-Phone Free School Policy:
Just a friendly reminder that all LWSH scholars have been provided a Yodr pouch to maintain a cell-phone free school. Devices including, I-Pads, tablets, personal computers, headphones are all prohibited and should remain at home. If a phone or device is confiscated by administration, we can make the determination to keep it until the end of the day, keep it until a parent picks it up, or keep it until the end of the school year depending on the number of cell-phone violations have already been issued to a scholar.
Parent-Powerhub:
As I mentioned earlier, getting passing course grades at the end of each quarter / semester is critical to having an on-track for graduation status. Therefore, we would like all of our families and scholars to gain access to course grades in real-time. Teachers are required to update grades in Powerschool every 3, 6, and 9 weeks of school. This is a great way to be empowered to "act and intervene" when your scholar shows signs of struggling in a course. To get access to your Parent Powerhub account, please call or visit the school, or even reach out on the Let's Talk Portal to request your username and password. Instructions on how to use the app are available to download below in English, Spanish, and Swahili.
Quarter 2 Award Ceremony:
Last, but certainly not least, we will be having our 2nd Student Award Ceremony on Friday, January 31st to celebrate the accomplishments of scholars who have exemplified being a Learner, a Leader, and a Citizen. All families are welcomed to join us for this event that is held in our cafeteria from 12:40pm - 1:40pm. We enjoy these times as we have the opportunity to celebrate our scholars who feel a sense of pride in what they have done for the quarter and bring optimism into the next quarter!
We look forward to another great month of school with the scholars and your partnership to bring success! If you have any questions, feel free to call the school at 216-838-7100.
Sincerely,
Juliet King
