Whitewood Elementary
3rd Grade
What We've Learned:
Math: Learning division facts by using the relationship between multiplication and division, fact families, dividing with zero and one, using the multiplication table for multiplying AND dividing, and solving and writing division and multiplication stories.
Pumpkin Fun: We did a short little activity with pumpkins the week of Halloween. Kids estimated and measured their pumpkin's weight, circumference, height, ribs, seeds, etc. Then they carved them!
Writing: We are about done with our Constellation Creation! We are getting ready to type it and share with our classmates. Next, we will focus on writing an informative piece. We are also lucky enough to have the opportunity to go to the public library and write a letter for Postage Pals. Date TBD.
Science: We finished our Animals Through Time where students developed an understanding of how animals and their environments have changed through time. We had a lot of fun watching an Our Planet episode about what happens with animals in the summer season.
ELA: The reading skills we worked on this month included cause and effect, theme, author's point of view, and main idea and key details. We learned new vocabulary words and their meanings. Grammar has been full of singular and plural nouns, irregular nouns, and predicates. And for spelling patterns, we have studied prefixes, silent letters, and long e, i, o, and u sounds.
Social Studies: Government: Students learned about how our government was founded, the 3 branches and what they do, and also the difference between local, state, and national governments. The school will partake in a mock election on November 5th!

First Diary
My daughter, Meg became really interested in reading when I started writing down her thoughts in a diary.
Some days, I’d write down what she said about school or our funny kitten. Other times, I’d ask her questions and write the answers. “What made you laugh today?” “Tell me about your best friend,”
When a page was finished, I’d read it to her. Boy, did she ever listen! I loved seeing Meg pull out her diary and “read” it to her dad. She was so proud! 💗
Take them along
Our family has gotten into the habit of taking books with us whenever we go out. When we have to wait at places like the doctor’s office, we have something special to do. Reading seems to magically soothe my children when they’re impatient or nervous. 💗
