Message from the Principal
Kellogg Families,
I hope everyone had a refreshing and restful three-day weekend. Martin Luther King Jr. Day allows us to take a moment to reflect on the legacy of Dr. King and the important values he championed—equality, justice, and service to others. I hope we all had the opportunity to honor his life and work while also encouraging us to think about how we can contribute to positive change in our own community.
Second quarter officially comes to a close this week. While this week is short, classrooms will be busy as teachers take time to wrap up end-of-quarter assessments and projects.
In this edition of the ROAR Newsletter are important announcements and reminders including:
- Upcoming No School days
- MAP Testing Next Week
- Personal Technology, ID Badges, and PBIS Lessons
- Community Circles
- ... and much more!
Have a wonderful week ahead!
Mr. Thai Nguyen
Principal
Kellogg Middle School

- Testing data is also considered for student's placement in high school courses
How
- Students who are absent or students who do not finish on the day of testing will be given additional time to complete the test.
- Tests typically take 2-3 class periods per subject. Students will follow a revised bell schedule on test day.

Personal Technology, ID Badges, and PBIS Lessons (New)
Personal Technology Expectations
At Kellogg Middle School, we continue to reinforce our personal technology expectations to ensure a productive and focused learning environment for all students. As a reminder, students are required to keep all personal technology devices, including cell phones, smartwatches, and tablets, in their lockers from 9:15 AM to 4:00 PM. This expectation helps minimize distractions and supports students in staying engaged with their learning throughout the day.
The PPS Board of Education recently voted to implement a district-wide ban on personal electronic devices, including cell phones and smartwatches, during the school day. This policy will take effect in the fall of 2025. However, since Kellogg Middle School already has similar guidelines in place, we are well aligned with this new district policy. This means the transition will be much smoother for our students, who are already doing a great job of keeping their personal technology in their lockers. Thank you for your continued support in maintaining a focused, distraction-free learning environment!
If you would like to review our personal technology policy and progressive discipline matrix for personal technology violations, please follow this link.
Student ID Badges
We’re excited to announce that on Thursday, January 23rd, all Kellogg students will receive their new student ID badges! Starting the next day on Friday, January 24th, students will be expected to wear their badges at all times while on campus.
We know this is a big change, but it’s a necessary one as part of the 2023 PPS District-wide Policy aimed at improving safety and security. This policy requires that all middle and high school students wear visible ID badges on campus as a safety measure to help identify students quickly and easily.
To make it fun, we’ll have some surprise prizes for students who are wearing their new ID badges and lanyards the day after they receive them! It’s a great way to celebrate this important new routine. Please take a moment to talk with your child about the best ways they can remember to wear their badge each day. Maybe they can choose a consistent spot at home to keep their badge or designate a place in their backpack where it’s always stored.
Below are some important expectations:
- Students are expected to wear their ID badge on a lanyard and in a visible location as soon as they enter the building.
- If a student forgets their badge, they can pick up a temporary one in the main office. If they lose it, we have a machine that can reprint a replacement badge, and they will receive a paper color copy and new badge will be kept filed and stored in the office.
- If a student repeatedly refuses to wear their badge, it may result in a lunch reflection or a meeting with a parent/guardian.
Find here the mini-lesson students were presented with last week about the why behind the student ID badges and our school wide expectations.
PBIS Reteach Lessons
Last Monday, we kicked off our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) re-teach lessons with our students!
As we do after every major break, we take this time to provide a refresher on our school-wide expectations to ensure students are set up for success as they return to their daily routines. The lessons focused on expectations in key common areas, including the hallway, bathroom, cafeteria, main office, library, and recess.
Re-teaching these important guidelines helps students stay focused, respectful, and responsible in all areas of the school, fostering a positive learning environment. We encourage families to continue reinforcing these expectations at home to support your child's success! Thank you for partnering with us in creating a welcoming and safe space for everyone.
Follow this link if you would like to view the lessons.
Community Circles (New)
We’re excited to share a new initiative that we began before Winter Break here at Kellogg!
Every Friday during advisory time, we’ve been gathering for Community Circles. These circles are a wonderful way for students to connect with one another. Each week, we start with an opening round question, followed by two rounds of questions designed to help students share more about themselves and build stronger relationships. We close each circle with a one-word share out about their past week.
Last Friday, we added an exciting new twist to our Community Circles! Several of our amazing support staff members—Principal Nguyen, Assistant Principals Ms. Mac and Dr. Carpenter, Isaac (Restorative Justice Specialist), Altynai (REAP Reflections program coordinator), and Anthony (Campus Safety Associate)—joined in as participants, leaving their roles at the door and taking part as members of the school community. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to connect with familiar faces in a new way!
Ask your student if they had a special guest join their community circle last Friday. We’re excited to continue fostering a sense of belonging and connection throughout the year!
Counselor's Corner (Update)
6th grade update
Last week all students participated in a counselor-led lesson on internet safety and their digital footprint. Parents: Ask your student what they can do to keep themselves safe online.
8th grade update
Last week 8th grade lessons started forecasting for high school. Franklin Counselors are here next week to do a presentation. Those students attending different high schools will be shown the course guides for those high schools.
Second Semester Schedules
I know many of us are thinking ahead to the second semester. Counselors have started getting requests to make an adjustment to student schedules. With that in mind here is our Kellogg Schedule Change Policy:

Incomplete schedule,
class level misplacement

Message from PTSA (Reminder)
Social Media and Website
Kellogg PTSA is on Facebook! Please follow us here for updates and information about what’s happening.
Kellogg PTSA also has a new website! Please visit us here for our calendar and upcoming events.
Early Pick Up (Reminder)
In general, we ask that you avoid picking up students early from school. Students are missing critical instructional time when they leave early. If possible, schedule appointments on Early Release Days and No School Days.
If you are picking up students early ...
- Avoid coming during Lunch and Recess times. It is more difficult to track down students during their Lunch and Recess.
- Avoid picking up your student between 3:45 PM and 4:00 PM, as our office becomes overwhelmed with accommodating early pick-ups and staff is limited in the afternoons. If you need to pick up early, we request that you arrive prior to 3:30 PM. If you arrive after 3:50 PM, you will kindly be asked to wait outside for the final bell at 4:00 PM.
Lastly, please be prepared to show your photo ID, as it is a legal requirement for picking up students during school hours. (i.e. driver’s license, state ID card, passport). As a reminder, your student will not be released to anyone that is not over the age of 18, anyone not listed on the registration form, or to anyone without an ID.
Thank you in advance for your understanding and support of your student and our school safety.
School Traffic Circulation Map (Reminder)
Thank you for taking the time to review our traffic circulation map provided by the Safe Routes to School teams at PBOT and PPS. PBOT and PPS staff visited our campus to conduct a traffic circulation observation and suggested the following modifications to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety
around our campus during the peak hours of arrival and dismissal.
Key Changes
- The School Street pilot project on SE Franklin Street behind the school has ended. SE Franklin Street will be no longer have School Street signs while PBOT and PPS revise the School Street program.
- As a dead-end street, drivers are discouraged from dropping off and picking up students on this section of SE Franklin St. Walking or biking is encouraged.
Vehicular Traffic
- Suggested vehicular traffic flow is depicted using purple arrows on your map.
- Drivers are encouraged to drive clockwise, so that the school is always on your right. Drop off students on the school-side of the street to limit crossings.
- Do not park in the school bus loading zone north of the school.
- When dropping-off or picking-up, avoid stopping in the travel lane or attempting to make U-turns. Student drop-off should occur in the marked parking section on SE 69 th Avenue. Do not drop off in the “No Stopping or Parking” area.
- Please consider parking 1-2 blocks from the school and walking the remainder of the way. This Park and Walk provides an opportunity to get active during the day and allows you to avoid the school traffic lines.
Thank you,
-Safe Routes to Schools Team
Action Item

Schoolwide Expectations (Reminder)
At Kellogg we are proud of our schoolwide expectations as they provide our students with safe, structured, and productive learning environments. Please take the time to review some of our expectations below.
Cell Phones and Technology Devices
Cell phones and all personal technologies (e.g. gaming devices, wireless headphones, Bluetooth speakers, etc.) are expected to be off and away in lockers during the school day. Students are expected to keep cell phones and technology devices off and away in the hallways, restrooms, and at lunch recess as well. If a student is spotted with a cell phone or technology device, it will be immediately confiscated and taken to the front office. Students with repeated cell phone or technology infractions will be placed on individualized cell phone and technology plans.
Backpacks
In alignment with many other middle schools in the District, all backpacks must be stored in lockers during the school day. Backpacks clutter classroom spaces and items are frequently lost or stolen unless they are stored safely in a locker. Students will use their binders to carry their learning materials throughout the school day.
Learning Logs
To help students stay organized and keep track of important dates and deadlines, students will be issued a Learning Log. Be sure to check your student's Learning Log regularly to stay up-to-date with your student's assignments, tests, and other announcements. Learnings Logs will also serve as the student's hall pass when students leave the classroom during non-transition times. It is critical that students do not lose their Learning Log.
Toys and Valuable Items
Students should leave all toys, valuable items, and any item that can cause safety concerns or distractions at home. Leaving these items at home will ensure items are not lost or stolen.
Closed Campus
Kellogg is a closed campus. All visitors must check-in at the front office. Students must be signed out and picked up by a parent or guardian in order to leave campus before dismissal time. Additionally, our school will not accept DoorDash, Uber Eats, or other deliveries to students. Parents and guardians are welcome to drop off lunch items for their students at any time.

Key Contacts (Reminder)
Below are the counselors and Administrators supporting each grade level.
Student safety, student well-being, and student learning are our top priorities. If you ever need to speak to a teacher, counselor, administrator, or any staff member, please call the front office or e-mail the individual directly to schedule a meeting. Unannounced meetings are often difficult to accommodate as school staff have busy and tight schedules. In particular, before school, after school, and lunch times are the busiest times in schools as most staff members are on duty to ensure student safety. Thank you for your support and understanding!
