Our Lady of Mercy
NEWSLETTER | TERM 1 | WEEK 1 | 7 February 2025
Luke Sirolli | Principal
Dear OLOM families,
Welcome back!
It was so lovely to see so many smiling faces from the children and their families on the first few days of school.
Thank you for welcoming me so warmly into your community. I have felt the kindness and love from the very first minute I have been at OLOM. Our school Motto of Integrity and Gentleness which is inspired by the charism of the Sisters of Mercy is a lived experience at OLOM.
This week we have focuses on our Behaviour Engagement Whole School initiative. In our classrooms we have created a class purpose statement of why we come to school. We have then identified helpful and unhelpful behaviours which help us live out our purpose.
The aim of doing this across the school and everyone using the same language is to reduce the cognitive load of students so they are not always trying to work out what they can and can't do. Children thrive with clear boundaries and expectations. This is what we are working towards.
In Week Two we will begin to discuss and explain with the students our ZERO Tolerance approach to:
Physical Violence - this includes hitting, punching, pulling hair, kicking, play fighting and any instance where physicalness inflicts or could inflict harm
Casual Racism - This is not only when words are used to hurt someone because of their race or religion, it is also when students use racial terms between friendship groups and think it is ok.
Threatening Behaviour - This includes verbal and written threats of violence.
We will not allow these things to occur at our wonderful school. ZERO Tolerance means that parents will be called to collect their children, and a meeting will be held between the school leadership team and the families to discuss the incident and the expectations of our school.
Once again, thank you for being such a kind, caring and welcoming community. I look forward to the weeks and months ahead as I get to know more of you and hear your stories and share mine.
Take care and God Bless.
