Superintendent's Newsletter
Harlandale Legacy,
Happy 2025! As we begin this new year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible accomplishments of our students, staff and community in 2024. From campus festivities to launching innovative programs that support student success, we have much to be proud of as a District. Looking ahead, I am certain 2025 will be a year of continued growth, collaboration and opportunity. Together, we will build on our shared commitment to our students, and make sure each of them knows they are supported and ready to take on their dreams.
Ribbon-Cutting Ceremonies
I’d like to begin the first newsletter of the year by highlighting two exciting new additions to our District that showcase our commitment to providing unique opportunities for our students. We recently celebrated ribbon-cutting ceremonies for two incredible facilities: The brand-new JROTC building at McCollum High School, made possible by Bond 2022 and our community’s belief in the future of our kids, and the state-of-the-art CTE Education Building. This CTE facility will offer eight cutting-edge programs—barbering, plumbing, welding, HVAC, electrical, dental assistant, networking and cybersecurity—enabling students to graduate with certifications that prepare them for immediate success in the workforce. These unique initiatives truly set Harlandale ISD apart, and demonstrate our dedication to equipping every student with skills to thrive.
Read to the Final Four Literacy Challenge
I am thrilled to share that Gillette Elementary has advanced to the Bracket Challenge Round of 68 Schools in this year's Read to the Final Four literacy challenge for 3rd grade students! The competition kicked off in early November, and will culminate with the NCAA Men's Final Four in April 2025. Throughout this exciting journey, our students and teachers will receive books, prizes and enjoy pep rallies to keep them eager. The final four schools will be invited to a special celebration at Fan Fest Friday with the winning class receiving a $5,000 library makeover. Let's cheer on Gillette Elementary as they embark on this contest!
Spurs Game Day Takeover
Our Harlandale High School Girls Basketball team recently experienced the game of a lifetime as they took part in a Spurs Game Day Takeover. The special game brought the excitement of a professional basketball game right to their home gym, complete with appearances by the Spurs Coyote and music from DJ Quake. Players were celebrated with special introductions, spirited halftime activities and fan support. This unforgettable evening not only highlighted the talent of our student-athletes but also showcased the Spurs' commitment to empowering young female athletes in our community.
School Board Recognition Month
January is School Board Recognition Month, and we are proud to celebrate the dedicated leaders who serve Harlandale ISD. Our School Board Trustees play a vital role in shaping the future of our district. Their commitment to advocating for our students and making thoughtful, impactful decisions reflects their deep passion for our community. Join us as we thank each of our Trustees for their service and leadership.
Wrapping Up
Thank you for being a part of our Harlandale Legacy. Let’s make this year one to remember!
Sincerely,
Gerardo Soto
