The Cardinal Way

Throughout my career, I’ve had talented people who have inspired me, fostered my growth, and pushed me to think and lead in new ways. I thought about what having a mentor meant for my development. Having a talented mentor in my corner allowed me the space I needed to reflect in the most meaningful ways. I needed a partner that engaged me in dialogue as we explored the depths of teaching reading and writing. I relied on my coaches for support when I was pushing the boundaries of my craft. I was drawn to coaches who treated me as an equal and felt they were learning from me too. My work was enhanced due to these partners, and my current body of work is under the direct influence of these experiences.

As I think back on these most influential people, they all had one profound impact on my development. They allowed me to think and grow alongside them. They allowed me to be completely vulnerable, they allowed me to trust and be trusted, they gave me open and honest feedback, and most importantly, they provided time and space for me to think about the possibilities and opportunities of growing my craft.

Week 14: Grateful Friday Challenge

Good morning, Friday! We are grateful to see you again. We are quickly approaching the halfway point of November, which means Thanksgiving is right around the corner. (I saw those of you with your ID upside down last week, we are not getting to Christmas until Thanksgiving has come and gone.) (51 words)

We have so much to be grateful for as we head into the holiday season, some things from here at school, some at home, some from memories from the past, and some for things to come. We all have great stories to share and people we are forever grateful to. And, low and behold, It was brought to my attention that

The New York Times is looking for tiny stories of gratitude. (72 words)

Have you ever dreamed of being a published author? And what if that writing piece just happened to be placed in The New York Times? You have had these ideas but don’t have time to write your story. Well, here is your chance. A 100-word story- in THE TIMES?? Your mother would be so proud! Just like your Canvas assignment, you have until tonight at 11:59pm to share your story with the New York Times. Even if you do not submit, share your tiny story with someone at school or someone at home before the clock strikes midnight. (100 words, nailed it!)

Mr. Hanley's AP English students have been reading The Crucible. As students have finished the book, they will use the ideas from the Crucible for an upcoming argumentative writing assignment. Students finished their reading by discussing key ideas from The Crucible. Students will use these discussions compared to the H.L. Mencken quote, “The average man does not want to be free. He simply wants to be safe,” to develop a theme for their paper.

Mr. Snodgrass and Mr. Stanich hosted our district's Indiana Engineering and Technology Advisory Board Meeting this week. Engineering and Technology teachers from the area met at Southport to tour our facility and discuss the strengths and challenges of their current programming. Teachers also share productive ideas to help provide real-life experiences for students in their classes.

Mrs. Johnson's Spanish II students have been studying Frida Kahlo's art as the learn more about Spanish culture and history. During this study, the students had to create a piece of art that used the major themes from Frida Kahlo's work. The students' art is proudly displayed outside of Mrs. Johnson's room.

Mr. Cantrell is the newest member of the SHS teaching staff. Mr. Cantrell's Earth Science students visited the lab to learn more about erosion. Students were able to use a water table filled with sand to see how water can traverse and find ways around obstacles. Students were able to create new paths and add new obstacles to see how the water would move through the sand and new erosion paths were created.

Ms. Neville's Education Professions class has been discussing and thinking about what teaching styles and philosophies have impacted their lives as learners. The students then used this information to create their own educational philosophies. The class has also had guest speakers from SHS visit the room to discuss their personal philosophies in education to help students model their personal beliefs.
