Sturgis Elementary Newsletter
April 2024
A Note From Principal Chantal Ligtenberg
South Dakota Weather:
Just a reminder to please have your students come to school in appropriate dress. If it isn’t below zero, raining, or large winds, students will be outside for recess. Our weather can change drastically during the day. Please make sure to send your child with a coat to school.
South Dakota State Assessment:
All third and fourth grade students will be taking a state assessment in the areas of English Language Arts and Math during the month of April. These assessments will occur in the month of April. Teachers have been making preparations by teaching test taking strategies and technology skills that will assist students in completing the online assessment. Students will have four to five testing sessions to break up the assessment. Please make every attempt to minimize appointments to allow us to complete the required state required assessment.
School Attendance:
Our school has had its share of absences with all the seasonal colds and flus going around. Because of these absences that are out of our control, I kindly ask you to please consider absences that are in your control to minimize the amount of days your child misses from school. Up to seven days are excused in a trimester. Anything more than seven within a trimester is considered unexcused unless you provide a doctor’s note excusing the absence.
Title I Summer School:
Due to funding, Sturgis Elementary will not have a Title I Summer School this upcoming summer. Title I teachers will provide parents of students they serve with resources the students can work on throughout the summer.

Volunteering
Educating youth takes a community effort, and because of that the Meade School Board is encouraging parents, guardians and other interested patrons to volunteer their time, knowledge and talents.
Members of the community bring new energies and resources into the schools and expand the walls of the classrooms. School volunteers enrich the educational program and strengthen the schools’ relationships with homes, businesses, public agencies and private institutions. All volunteers in the Meade School District do so without pay or employee benefits, except for workers’ compensation. For those interested in volunteering.
Mail to Meade School District, 1230 Douglas Street, Sturgis, S.D. 57785.
