Magyar's Message March 15, 2024
-From The Desk of the Superintendent-
Dear ALCS Families,
We have one week left before the end of the third quarter and less than two weeks left until the start of Spring Break. Where does the time go?
Over the course of the last two years we have held several community forums to update the public regarding our district and building plans. We are continuing the process to engage our community and offer a place where residents and community members can come together to hear from district leadership, as well as provide your own feedback regarding our school district.
We invite all of you to come to our State of the Schools Address which will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. April 10 in the Commons at Avon Lake High School. We are also asking for your assistance to alert your neighbors and help spread the word to others who may not have children in our district.
In addition, we are taking questions in advance of the event so that we can include them into the State of the Schools presentation. There will also be an opportunity at the end of the presentation to take questions from the audience. Deadline to submit questions is April 1. Click here to submit a question. The event will be audio recorded. All Board of Education members will be in attendance and it will be noticed to the public as a Special Meeting.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the online survey for feedback regarding our Building ALegacy initiative. We will be sharing the results from the survey at the upcoming Board of Education meeting which will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 19 at the L.A.K.E. Center at Avon Lake High School. The presentation will be available on our district website after the meeting.
This week’s Internet Safety Parent Information Night featuring nationally recognized speaker, Jesse Weinberger, was very powerful and offered a great deal of insight as to what our children are being exposed to at a young age. We will be providing some additional information from the presentation in next week's email message. Thank you to everyone who attended.
History was made last weekend as ALHS junior Rejan Al-Hashash became the first girls wrestler from Avon Lake and Lorain County to win a State wrestling championship. Congratulations, we are proud of you.
Congratulations also to our ALHS Bowling Team for their Division I State Runner-up title last week.
Thank you also to our dedicated coaches for motivating and inspiring our student athletes.
We are fortunate to have such a great education partner in the Lorain County JVS as another option for our high school students. Our ALHS students are excelling in a variety of programs the JVS offers. During the recent Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Regional Competition, ALHS junior Stevie Crnjak received a Silver medal in the Culinary Arts Competition (Baking and Pastry). Congratulations.
Thank you for your continued support of our schools.
Sincerely,
Joelle Magyar
Upcoming Important Dates
Elementary schools kick off One District One Book
The excitement was contagious throughout all four elementary schools in the district as clues were given leading up to the big reveal for the annual One District One Book initiative. This week friendly dragons were spotted in our buildings as students and staff learned the book they would be reading together is Zoey and Sassafras: Dragons and Marshmallows, by Asia Citro.
Every elementary student in the district received their own copy of the book in order to promote literacy at home and school. Every night families will read the chapter(s) designated for that night and complete the trivia question along with the reading to bring back to school to be entered into a drawing for prizes. In addition, the schools have partnered with 10 community businesses to participate in a scavenger hunt. Families will visit the businesses and look for Marshmallow, the Dragon. Students will get a mark on their passport at each location once they’ve found the dragon. When their passport is complete, they will return it to school to be entered in a drawing.
Thank you to the local businesses listed below for your generous participation in the scavenger hunt.
EarthWise Pet
Salad Kraze
Marco's Pizza
Emilie’s Coffee House
Avon Lake Public Library
Old School Pizza & Wings
Sherwin Williams
Ace Hardware
Dirte Pi
Dairy Queen
In the book Zoey has a cat named Sassafras that helps her take care of the dragon in the story. One of the goals in the One District One Book initiative is to try to incorporate a sense of community by helping a local organization that correlates to someone or something in the book. This year we are collecting items for Love-a-Stray, cat division, in honor of all the help Sassafras provides.
We hope all of our families enjoy this time together reading and participating in the many activities featured throughout this initiative.
