A Note From Dr. Hooks
Dear Hyde-Addison ES Families,
As the days get longer and the weather warms up, there is a natural sense of excitement in the air. Spring has arrived! While we look forward to the upcoming break (April 14-18), it is also a key time for learning and growth. Every day counts, and strong attendance helps keep students on track as we wrap up important units and prepare for a strong finish to the school year. Let’s work together to make the most of this time, by supporting our students in showing up, staying focused, and finishing strong before spring break. Thank you for your collaboration.
Enrollment season begins next Friday, March 28, 2025. This is a great time to start gathering all of your needed documents for a seamless enrollment process. Please be mindful that reenrolling by early April will significantly support maintaining small classroom sizes. More information is shared below. There has been several updates to the district process.
As always, please feel free to email hyde.addison@k12.dc.gov, with any school specific inquiries.
Kindest Regards,
Dr. Calvin Hooks, Principal
Hyde-Addison Elementary School

School Technology Policy Reminder
As shared in the Family Handbook, should families choose to send their child to school with a cell phone or other personal technology, including smartwatches (such as Apple Watches, Gizmos, etc.), the device must remain in the student’s backpack throughout the school day. Additionally, all devices should be powered off or set to airplane mode to minimize distractions and maintain a focused learning environment. The school does not recommend such devices be brought to school and the school is not responsible for lost or missing items.

Future Chef Event – March 28 at Whittier Elementary
Whittier Elementary School will host a Future Chef event, which will take place on March 28. They are still eagerly awaiting student registrations and encourage participation in this exciting opportunity.
The idea behind this event is to educate kids on healthy eating habits. Too often, we hear about children not making the right choices when it comes to their nutrition, but eating healthy should be fun! That’s why they are inviting students to submit recipes to complete the plate with their favorite main dish.
Judging Criteria:
- Originality
- Kid-Friendly
- Ease of Preparation
- Healthy Attributes
- Plate Presentation
- Taste
- Student Chef Presentation to Judges
Event Timeline:
- A distinguished panel of administrators will evaluate the submitted recipes and select finalists from each school.
- Selected finalists will be formally invited to a Culinary Competition Cook-Off on March 28 at Whittier Elementary, at a time to be confirmed.
All finalists will receive a framed plaque and will have the opportunity to showcase their culinary talents. Local press will be present to capture the students’ creations, and parents and teachers will be able to view and taste the final dishes during the event reception.
Please note:
đźš— Transportation will not be provided on March 28. Participants must be dropped off and picked up at Whittier Elementary School.
👨‍🍳 Each group of kids will have a kitchen staff member assigned to ensure safety and proper food preparation practices.
As an added bonus, this competition is one of 15 local competitions organized by Sodexo across the country in March. The winning recipe from each event will move on to a national competition in April, where students will have the chance to win exciting prizes!
Attached you will find the flyer and the recipe submission forms for students.

The OSSE DC School Report Card
“The 2024 DC School Report Card is built on OSSE’s amended ESSA State Plan, which increases the school accountability system’s emphasis on student growth and marginalized student groups. OSSE has calculated a summative score for each school, as required by USED and the District’s ESSA State Plan. To determine a school’s summative score, OSSE calculates metric scores for each student group, combines student group scores into single metric scores, and then calculates the school-level summative score (up to 100 points). The student groups included are students with disabilities, students who are economically disadvantaged, English learners, and racial/ethnic groups.”
Data points include Academic Achievement, Academic Growth, Student Attendance, Early Childhood Environment, English Language “Proficiency”, and Enrollment.
Based on the Office of the State Superintendent of Education's DC School Report Card Accountability Scores (2024)…
Hyde-Addison ES was ranked #1 for all DCPS Elementary Schools.
Hyde-Addison ES was ranked #1 for all DCPS Elementary, Middle and High Schools.
Hyde-Addison ES was ranked #1 for all DCPS and Public Charter Schools in Washington, DC.
You can read more about how OSSE calculates summative scores at OSSE Data Discovery.
