Parent-Teacher Communication
Hello Fifth Grade Families!
I hope this newsletter finds each of you well, and that you are loving this cooler and more comfortable fall-like weather!
Now that we the first four weeks of school have passed, and we have established classroom routines and procedures, I wanted to make sure parents and teacher have created open lines of communication for the success of the student. The purpose of this electronic classroom newsletter is keep all parties up-to-date, and informed of current and upcoming classroom and school events.
It is my goal to send these electronic newsletters weekly, if not bi-weekly. If you would like this communication sent to another or additional email address, please let me know!

Back to School Night
Moss-Nuckols will be having a "Back to School Night" from 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16, 2014. The evening will begin with a presentation from our Principal, Tiffany Chatman, and our PTA president, Kelly Garrett. Following the presentation, parents and families are invited to visit classrooms, for a meet-and-greet with teachers.
The fifth grade team will be holding three, twenty minute rotations beginning at 6:30-6:50, 6:50-7:10, and 7:10-7:30., where we will discuss topics, including 1st nine weeks content, the discipline plan, and parent-teacher communication.
Hope to see you then!

What's Happening in Reading?
We began the school year, reviewing how to pick "Good Fit Books", and discussing the importance of independent reading time. Students are given Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R) time each day during morning work, and in the reading block. During that time, students are expected to pick a book on their independent reading level, and complete silent sustained reading. I feel it is important for students to build that independent reading stamina, as it leads way for them to completely finish a book, and it helps prepare them for the upcoming Fifth Grade Reading SOL.
Students were also introduced to the Accelerated Reading (A.R.) program. We reviewed the grade level's and my expectations for the program. This month, students were given the goal of 15 A.R. points for August and September combined. Students are given time in the morning to take A.R. tests, as well as during their independent computer time in the reading block rotation schedule. All of the students who reach their monthly A.R. goal, will be able to attend this month's A.R. celebration. I am encouraging students to reading A.R. books each night for their 20 minutes of independent reading. Students who have been continuously reading each night, have been successful in obtaining their weekly A.R. points. Please check your child's agenda every Monday night to see where he or she stands with this month's A.R. goal.
Please continue to read each night, and complete the reading log. Encourage your child to check out books that are of their interest, but also are on their independent reading level, and can go towards their A.R. reading goal.
In the reading class, we have been working on non-fiction. We began our unit by comparing and contrasting non-fiction texts and characteristics to fictional texts and features. We then spent time identifying and the different features that make non-fiction texts unique. Students had the opportunity to read a variety of texts including National Geographic for Kids and Scholastic News.
We are now reviewing the different text structures that authors use to organize non-fiction texts. These structures include comparing and contrasting, cause and effect, and sequencing. We will continue with this non-fiction unit until the end of the nine weeks. If you would like more information on this nine week's reading instruction, please feel free to visit the LCPS pacing guide.

Contact Me
If you ever have any questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am usually unable to answer the phone during the day because of classroom instruction time, but please feel free to leave a voice mail (ext. 6144). Please give me at least 24 hours to respond, and if you have not heard from me, please feel free to contact me again! You can also write in your child's agenda or FOX Folder. I try to sign agendas everyday, and I would appreciate if parents could sign as well. That way, I know that you are reviewing your child's homework assignments and are aware of upcoming texts/quizzes/events.
Thank you!
