Experiential Education Opportunities for ALL students
This week we are highlighting a phenomenal opportunity for students to earn A+ hours through service learning & mentoring at TASK: Team Activities for Special Kids. TASK is a year-round instructional sports program, and is looking for volunteers to help mentor young athletes during their practices and games. There are opportunities many days of the week in various sports. Students can volunteer for any sport--no expert knowledge or stellar athleticism is necessary. What is most important is the willingness to be a kind and encouraging buddy to the participant.
Students first register in GivePulse (via the QR or link above) so that we can help guide them through TASK's volunteer approval process. Once approved as a volunteer, there will be an online scheduling program where students can pick days, times, and activities independently.
TASK has a program manager who will match the volunteer to athlete. Many of the children at TASK just need a “buddy” who can complete the activity with them. Many children need encouragement and someone who can help model the activity so they can complete the activity. TASK focuses on what children CAN do and encourages supportive words. Students will NEVER be alone with a child, and there are volunteers and instructors around you who can assist, if needed.
Encourage your child to sign up for this program with a friend--the more the merrier!
Reminder: We can help students who are pursuing their A+ hours find connections to service learning that include the mentorship or job shadowing components the A+ program requires. Have your students stop by to talk with us, or independently explore their GivePulse account opportunity listings at wgsd.givepulse.com.
WGHS Sophomore Lilah Oelke Presents at National Medical Conference
WGHS sophomore Lilah Oelke recently presented at the 12th Annual Scientific Sessions conference hosted by the Cardiac Neurodevelopmental Outcome Collaborative and St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
Lilah is passionate about supporting those with adolescent heart disease. Her presentation focuses on her experiences at Camp Rhythm and her involvement with the teen Pulse group she created. Through her participation in Pulse via The Chelsea Center, she has earned academic credit and gained invaluable experience during internships at Mighty Oakes and the Ollie Hinkle Heart Foundation. Lilah's dedication and passion for making a difference are truly inspiring.
We are incredibly proud of her accomplishments and look forward to seeing her continue to shine.
