Dear Evergreen Elementary Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! As we move into December, our school is buzzing with excitement. Next week, our Kindergarten through 3rd-grade students will showcase their hard work at our winter concerts, filling the air with festive songs they've been diligently practicing. With the colder weather upon us, please ensure your children come prepared with snow pants and appropriate winter attire. Our 5th graders are currently enjoying their overnight visits to the school forest, where they are immersing themselves in nature and hands-on learning experiences. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated staff for their tireless efforts in making each school day both enjoyable and productive. Wishing you all a happy and joyous holiday season!
Warm regards,
Richard Koepke
The Importance of Routine in Children's Lives
Did you know that having predictability in life helps children learn and grow? Routines are very important for K-5 students because they help kids feel safe and secure. Knowing what to expect each day can make children less anxious and more focused. For example, having a regular wake-up routine like getting up at 7:00 AM, brushing teeth, and eating breakfast can start the day on the right foot. Similarly, a bedtime routine like having a bath, reading a story, and going to bed by 8:00 PM helps children wind down and get ready for sleep. These routines make daily transitions easier and help kids develop good habits, making them feel more confident and independent. By sticking to routines at home and school, we can create a positive and supportive environment for our young learners.
Tech in Action: Engaging Young Minds at Evergreen Elementary School
At Evergreen Elementary we are committed to leveraging technology to enhance learning and engagement for every student. Across grade levels, students are using digital tools to explore, create, and collaborate in ways that bring their learning to life.
One way technology is making a positive impact is through the use of Logitech Crayons! Logitech Crayons are digital pencils that allow students to write and draw on their iPads. In third grade math classes, students have begun using the Crayons to draw out and explain how to solve math problems in an engaging way. Other grade levels in our school use digital workbooks in English Language Arts classes with the Crayons. These digital workbooks allow teachers to monitor student learning and provide feedback.
Our art students with Mrs. VanSlyke, are also buzzing with creativity thanks to the Logitech Crayons. For instance, students in fourth grade recently worked on a project using the app Pages where they planned out a design for their Native American Beadwork project—a fantastic combination of culture and artistic expression! Additionally, students in grades 3-5 use the app Artsonia to create and update their digital art portfolios. These online portfolios allow students to monitor their progress, showcase their hard work, and connect with their families.
Research and independent learning have also reached new heights with technology in our school. Some students in 5th grade use research tools like Kiddle to learn about cultures around the world. They can even participate in group projects using tools like Keynote to showcase their learning. This tool enables them to work together whether in the classroom or from home. Third grade students have also used research tools learned in IMC to research topics after recently finishing a novel. They had to research a topic presented in the book and share what they learned with their classmates. These experiences mirror real-world problem-solving and teamwork skills they will carry with them into the future.
For our youngest learners, technology introduces foundational skills through educational games and storytelling apps. For older students, it provides a platform to dive deeper into research and presentation tools, preparing them for middle school and beyond.
We’re proud of how our students are embracing these opportunities and becoming creators and critical thinkers in an ever-evolving digital world.
