Port Angeles School District
NEWS AND NOTES - May 2023
Upcoming Days!
Port Angeles teachers create a sense of safety and belonging for students, and we are SO grateful for the work they do.
SchoolNurses have been critical in improving public health and ensuring student academic success for more than 120 years!
Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls
Wearing red helps bring awareness to the history of the underestimated 5,712 cases of MMIWG reported in 2016. Out of the 5,712, the Department of Justice database only logged 116 of those cases.
Native American Indigenous women are murdered at a rate that is ten times the national average on some reservations and the 3rd leading cause of death among Native American Indigenous women. 84% of Native American Indigenous women experience some kind of violence in their lifetime.
Please join us on on May 5th by wearing red and bringing awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
Happy Cinco de Mayo!
Cinco de Mayo, May 5, honors Mexico’s unlikely victory over France in the 1862 Battle of Puebla, where Mexican forces were largely outnumbered. While many lives were lost, the battle symbolized Mexican resistance, especially for the people of Puebla.
Today, the holiday is widely observed in the United States and celebrates Mexican American history, culture, heritage, and traditions in our communities.
Many schools and classrooms across the district will celebrate and enjoy this day, and we hope you will too! Students, along with their families at Roosevelt Elementary, will celebrate with a Fiesta lunch!
