Mrs. Rice's Reflection
Riverside Families,
We have begun our March is Reading Month activities, which is a time for elementary schools and families to partner around the joy of reading. Each March, as we move toward the first days of Spring weather, we spend the month celebrating reading in school wide fun, including students’ favorite book competition and various dress-up days. This month-long reading celebration is documented on the calendar below and in photos that share the fun we’ve been having.
Please join us by celebrating what your student has accomplished as a reader. In report cards
coming home in backpacks this week, second trimester marks are posted - this is a great time to take note of your student as a reader and use the March is Reading Month excitement to create a new family reading routine. Check out these ideas from Reading Rockets as well as Willard Library’s Spring Family Events.
If you’d like more information, Early K-4 Report Card marks are explained here in English, and additional languages for our Riverside families are also available: K-4 အဆင့် အမှတ်အသား ဖော်ပြချက် and グレードマークの説明 and Descripciones de calificaciones
As we shared in the Fall, it’s important to remember that each trimester we are indicating where your student is in relation to the end-of-year target for the skill or concept. The goal is for all students to receive a “Meeting the Standard,” or a 3, by the end of the year. Students who are on track to meet that goal are likely to have a current mark of “Emerging” (1) or “Developing” (2).
This can be confusing, so please reach out for help if you need more information.
Have a great weekend!

We would love to hear from you!!!
Throughout the rest of the year, if you would take 3-5 minutes to fill out the Shout-Out for one Riverside staff member you’d like to celebrate, I will email the teacher and our superintendent team to make sure that your stories are told. I would also like to highlight some of the shout-outs in our newsletters, and families can be anonymous if they’d prefer.
Please click the Staff Shoutout link any time to drop in a
celebration of impact in multiple languages.
I will pull the Shout-Outs weekly to share.
Intervention Information
Students at Riverside begin learning about fractions at an early age. In kindergarten they begin using simple shapes to form larger shapes. They continue to build on these skills throughout the grade levels and end their time at Riverside learning about equivalent fraction, ordering fractions, building fractions, multiplying fractions, and understanding the relationship between decimals and fractions. Here is a fun game that can be played at home with all levels of learners that will help learn about fractions.
Fraction War
Materials: 2 pencils, 1 deck of cards, something to write with and write on
You can build and compare fractions with this math card game. Remove face cards from the deck. When working with younger grades, stick to more common fractions like halves, fourths and thirds, so remove any number cards necessary as well. Before you begin with older students, decide if fractions can be improper or not. If not, and an improper fraction is created, the player loses that round.
Each player needs a pencil. The object of the game is to create the largest fraction. Players put the pencil down on the desk and draw a card. They place it above the pencil if they want it to be the numerator and below the pencil for the denominator. Once placed, it can’t be moved. Players take turns pulling cards from the deck and placing them. When all four cards are placed, the resulting fractions are compared and the largest wins.
EK is Sensational!!
