- Habit 1: Be Proactive®
- Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind®
- Habit 3: Put First Things First®

Erin's Law
Erin’ Law for Sexual Abuse and Prevention
Section 59-32-20(B) of the South Carolina Code of Laws
Beaufort County School District Overview and Implementation
In 2014, the South Carolina Legislature passed Erin's Law, as part of the Comprehensive Health Education Act. The purpose of this law is to ensure that all students Kindergarten through Grade Twelve (12) annually receive this prevention instruction during the academic school year. The intent of the law is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to remain safe from sexual assault and how to make a report if an assault occurs.
Instructional units for Erin's Law were approved by the State Department of Education for use by school districts as a resource guide. The Beaufort County School District (BCSD) will bring in its community partner, Child Abuse Prevention Association (CAPA), to provide the state approved preventative instructional programs Play It Safe!® and Think First & Stay Safe®. These programs are evidence-informed, specialized, age-appropriate child sexual, physical, and emotional abuse and neglect risk reduction programs for children ages Kindergarten through 5th grade. Each grade level includes a variety of takeaway resources and materials in English and Spanish, so you and your child can reinforce these concepts at home. For more information or to review these programs, please contact April Fletcher-Clark, Director of Programs at CAPA, at 843.524.4350 or outreach@capabeaufort.org.
The BCSD recognizes the sensitivity of the state mandated subject-matter in Erin's Law that does not permit parent/legal guardians to opt their students out of this prevention instruction. It is the goal of the BCSD to provide age-appropriate instruction, as well as transparency of the related curriculum with BCSD families. Parents and Legal Guardians are encouraged to discuss all health safety topics with their children in coordination with the health and safety curriculum sequence.
If you have any further questions and would like to preview the materials, please feel free to contact me at 843-322-2310 or melissa.vogt@beaufort.k12.sc.us.
