JTE Parent Newsletter

Tiger Families,
We have had another great week of learning at JTESOI! We had such a fun Read Across America week full of great learning activities! Next week, we will have student-led parent conferences and our Scholastic Book Fair. We will be selling yearbooks in front of the office. Also, please take time to give us your input on our parent survey while you are at conferences. Looking forward to your visit!
Our Scholastic book fair will be open in the library during parent teacher conference week and the dates and times will be:
Monday, March 10th…7:45am-6:30pm
Tuesday, March 11th…7:45am-6:00pm
Wednesday, March 12th…7:45am-3:15pm
Thursday, March 13th…7:45am-3:15pm
Friday, March 14th…7:45am-3:15pm
ELPA21 Testing began March 7th and will begin throughout the month of March. Any student who is an English language learner and has not exited the ESL program will be taking this test. This test assesses their reading, speaking, writing, and listening skills. Please make sure your student gets a good night’s rest and arrives at school on time each day. You can see the graphic below for testing dates for each grade level.
In order to build a solid connection between home and school, Tyson strives to create a parent engagement plan with the family as the main component. We will be meeting on Tuesday, March 10th at 6:00 PM to review the plan and hear your feedback. If you are unable to attend and would like to give feedback, please click on the link below, which has the plan attached. You can then complete the Google form with any comments or questions you might have after your review. We appreciate your time and energy in making John Tyson Elementary School of Innovation an even stronger school!
ATLAS scores are now available for you to view in the ATLAS Parent Portal. Parents received an access code via email. This code will allow you to access their ATLAS results from any ATLAS assessment they have taken so far. The family portal can be accessed at this link: https://atlasportal.org/families.html. Once you have logged in, you can click on the “Guide” button for more information about how to interpret scores. The ATLAS Interim assessments evaluate all standards taught at the student’s current grade level. Students are not expected to have mastered these standards at this point in the year, so it is not uncommon to see scores of below mastery at this point in the school year. One of our Strategic Action Plan goals is for each child to be on or above grade level in reading every year as measured by the state summative assessment.
We would like your feedback on how to utilize our Title I funds. These funds will be used to help support each student to be on or above grade level in reading and math. You can give your suggestions by clicking on the survey linked here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdPycYWpW7R3HhFtKfCo3GknSQ_wZuSmqUMIhP5on6Ex9PFyQ/viewform
Beginning in the 2024-2025 school year, Arkansas is transitioning to a new state-wide assessment system for Kindergarten through Fifth Grade students. This new assessment system will include a beginning-of-year screener for Kindergarten through Third Grade students to identify areas in literacy and math where your child may benefit from additional support and provide their teacher with the information necessary to help them grow. You can see a detailed schedule below. You may also access practice tests with your child at home by visiting https://atlasportal.org/families.html. This site is also where you will be able to see your child’s score report.
Just a reminder…
Students may not have access to cell phones or smart watches with a texting/calling feature during school hours. If students bring a cell phone or smart watch with a texting/calling feature, it must remain in their backpack and on silent. We are not responsible for lost or stolen cell phones or smart watches.
JTE is a WONDERful place to be! Go, Tigers!
Thank you for your partnership,
Dr. Shelly R. Poage, Principal, and Mrs. Ashley Kirby, Assistant Principal

JTE Character Matrix
JTE will use a Positive Behavior Interventions and Support System. We have created positively stated expectations/rules across the school to make our school safe, positive, and predictable. At John Tyson Elementary School, our student expectations are "Take care of yourself," "Take care of others," and "Take care of this place." To teach these expectations, we use a matrix that has specific examples for how to follow the expectations around the school. These examples were taught through classroom lessons in the fall and continue to be reviewed throughout the year. You can see the matrix below. In order to continue encouraging and reinforcing these positive behaviors, Tigers have been earning orange Tiger Tickets when they exhibit these behaviors. Each month, beginning in September, we will be opening our Tiger Ticket Store where students can exchange the tickets they have earned for fun prizes and experiences.
