Rays Update
September 26, 2024
Message from the Principal
Rays,
I cannot believe we are almost in October. I wanted to thank all the parents who attended Coffee with the Principal this week. We had a great discussion around instruction and student learning at Reagan. While we may not be able to offer this every month, I will be creating a video for October that allows parents a look at all the student experiences and clubs we offer at Reagan. Be on the lookout for this video soon. I look forward to seeing everyone at our Back-to-School picnic next Friday, October 4th.
We wanted to send our Rays Update out early this week to let you know that we will have a lock down drill on Friday September 27th. Picture Day is also tomorrow Friday September 27th.
For our lock down drill we would like you to know that the announcements will state this is a drill and students will be notified that this is not a real lockdown. We wanted to give our community the opportunity to speak with their child(ren) about the drill and answer any potential questions prior to Friday. Our goal is to make sure all students feel safe on campus and not catch any of them by surprise.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Alison Pennington
Principal

Attendance Announcement
Ray Families,
We would like to let you know that we have been monitoring our attendance and tardies for the first seven weeks of school. We have noticed significant decreases in attendance on Mondays and Fridays. It is imperative all students are on campus learning each day of the week. We have two attendance laws that must be followed in Texas. One is for the number of unexcused absences (10 total per year) and the other is for the number of minutes a student is in class throughout the year.
We have also noticed multiple students are coming to school late (any time after 7:30); this counts as a tardy. We are concerned because students who are tardy on a regular basis miss a significant number of instructional minutes. For example, a 2nd grade student who is 10 minutes late three times per week will miss 40% of the weekly instruction during Number Corner, an essential component of our math curriculum.
We want to make sure that all children have the best possible chance to succeed, and we’re here to help. If there is a particular way that we can assist your child, please let us know. Together, we can create a plan to improve attendance and support your child’s success.
Thank you,
Alison Pennington

Volunteering
Hi,
Many parents have asked about volunteer opportunities. As mentioned above in the principal message we are working on creating a video that will highlight our volunteer opportunities as a campus. I wanted to make sure I clarified volunteering and RAPTOR. This year the district moved to a new system. When you apply to be a volunteer through Leander ISD (https://www.leanderisd.org/volunteering/ ), it was communicated that you should see volunteer opportunities for your campus through Raptor. This function is currently not working. To make our community aware of volunteer opportunities through PTA; PTA will be making sign-up forms for volunteer opportunities until this is fixed. This is a district wide issue, and they are working with RAPTOR to fix the concern.
Literacy Partners Needed
PLEASE join our Reagan Literacy Partners Team by volunteering to read for 30 minutes, ONCE a week with 2 students, 15 minutes each, in a one-on-one reading time! It's fun and rewarding to help our young students become better, more confident readers with a greater love for books!
For more information, please contact Heather Bonham, Reagan's Literacy Partner Coordinator, at 512-656-9933 OR register to volunteer at education-connection.org.
Help VRHS Incubator Students
Dear Reagan Parents,
We are students in the Incubator Vista Ridge program, which helps students develop a company and learn entrepreneurship skills. We have an idea for a new product that deals with child safety in the kitchen. In preparation for a presentation in November, we are gathering feedback from parents in the district. We would like your input on our idea, and ask you to fill out this quick 5-minute survey for some feedback on our child protection product by October 10th.
Thank you for your help!
