The Importance of Attendance
Dear Mountaineer Parents and Students,
The staff at Iron Mountain Public Schools are excited to welcome you to a new school year filled with
opportunities to learn and engage!
Getting into the habit of daily attendance is more important than ever. It helps to:
● Reduce stress
● Make it easier to connect with friends and teachers
● Support learning
Please call us if you need help with attendance.
North Elementary Office: 906-779-2626
5-12 Building Office: 906-779-2610
Students and families are highly encouraged to read the newly updated EK-12th grade handbook,
located on our website, www.imschools.org.
A few notable statements we would like to share:
● If a student is absent, the parent/guardian must call the school within 24 hours to excuse the
absence. After 24 hours, the student’s attendance will remain absent/unexcused.
● Frequently absent is defined as a student who is unexcused/excused absence from school for
more than 8 days within a semester. Refer to the handbook for further information.
● Students that are absent from school consistently and/or habitually may result in loss of
learning, frustration, lack of social interaction, and/or loss of credit.
● The school district is responsible for reporting attendance and is held to truancy and attendance
laws and regulations.
● Truancy procedures will take place when attendance has been deemed as frequently absent and
is significantly impacting the students' learning experience.
We are working to make our school environment a place where everyone can be safe, healthy and
learning. We will do our best to listen and partner with you so that our children have a successful year.
Do not hesitate to reach out to your school’s principal with questions or concerns.
If you have any questions about the Truancy Ordinance, please feel free to reach out to the Truancy
Officer, Matt Opolka, who is the School Resource Officer (SRO). He can be reached at 906-779-2610.
Sincerely,
Principal Andy Mendini- North Elementary
Principal Amy Ryan- East Elementary, Central Middle School, Iron Mountain High School
