Community Events
1. Student Service Learning Hours Opportunities
Our Montgomery County Maryland chapter works with partner organizations like Holy Cross Hospital, Children's Hospital, A Wider Circle, and the Montgomery County Department of Social Services (among many others) to distribute blankets to children who are in the hospital, homeless, in foster care, in shelters, and in other situations where just a small comfort can make a major difference. All these blankets are made by volunteers. For specifics, please see our local chapter's website at www.tinyurl.com/projectlinusmcmd.
Middle and high school students can earn SSL hours with Project Linus in 2 ways:
1. Attending one of our monthly meetings and helping us to make blankets. Our first meeting of the year will be Monday, September 9. We meet once a month, on the 2nd Monday of the month, from 6:30-8:30 PM in the cafeteria of Wood Middle School in Rockville. For our friends who live further north, on November 18 and December 16, we will have additional meetings, located at Baker Middle School in Damascus. All the meeting dates are listed on the attached flyer. Please do note that we provide all the necessary supplies and our adult volunteers supervise the blanket making activities. No special skills or experience is required. No pre-registration is required -- just show up and have fun. We provide completed SSL forms at the end of the meeting.
2. Students can also earn SSL hours by making blankets outside of meetings, provided that pictures and documentation are provided. We ask that students making blankets at home first attend one of our meetings, or contact us at projectlinus.mc@gmail.com, to make sure they are following the proper instructions.
