KSD140 Connection
January 2025
Superintendent's Message
The start of a new year is always an exciting time, full of potential and fresh opportunities for learning, growth, and achievement. As we move forward, I’d like to share a few key reminders to ensure a strong start to the second half of the school year.
Staying Informed with ParentSquare
Communication is essential to student success. KSD 140 teachers and administrators use ParentSquare to provide important updates on your student’s progress, classroom activities, and upcoming events. If you’re not already familiar with our notification system, now is a great time to explore its features and ensure you’re receiving timely information. Should you need any assistance, our schools are here to help!
eLearning Day Protocols
Staying informed is also essential as we navigate the winter season. Please visit the Emergency Closing section of our website to learn more about our winter weather guidelines, communication channels, and eLearning day protocols.
MAP Testing: A Tool for Growth
As part of our commitment to personalized learning, students will participate in the winter session of MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing this month. These assessments provide valuable data to help our educators tailor instruction and support individual growth.
The new year offers endless possibilities for learning, connection, and achievement. Thank you for your continued partnership and dedication to our students’ success. Here’s to a fantastic second semester!
Sincerely,
Dr. Dan Callaghan
Superintendent

Board of Ed Recognizes D140 Spelling Bee Finalists
At the January 17 board meeting, the District 140 school board celebrated the accomplishments of Spelling Bee champion, Jillian C., along with finalists Layla S. and Gabriella G. Jillian, a fifth-grader from McAuliffe Elementary School, claimed the top spot by spelling "respiratory" correctly. Layla, also a fifth-grader at McAuliffe Elementary, earned second place, while third-place honors went to Grissom Middle School's eighth-grader Gabriella G.
Best of luck to Jillian, who will represent D140 in the 15th Annual Suburban Cook County ISC Scripps Spelling Bee at Lincoln Hall School in Lincolnwood on Tuesday, February 25.
COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS
District 140 Middle Schools Gear Up for High School Step-Up Days
Each January, Andrew High School brings Step-Up Days to our eighth-grade Grissom and Prairie View students.
Step-Up Days are designed to inspire and prepare our future high schoolers. Students have the unique opportunity to connect with Andrew teachers and student leaders, explore various course offerings, discover countless clubs, activities, and sports, and learn how to get the most out of their high school experience.
We’re thrilled to see our middle schoolers take this exciting step forward and can’t wait to watch them soar as Andrew High School’s newest T-Bolts.
