Madison Memo
February 2025
A Message from the Principal
Dear Families,
Happy February! This month, we’re excited to focus on the power of reading, spreading kindness, and building stronger connections between school and home.
We know how important it is for children to develop strong reading habits, and your support at home makes all the difference. We encourage you to carve out time each day to read with your child or have them read independently. Engaging in these moments together fosters not just academic growth but also wonderful family memories.
As part of this effort, we’re asking for your renewed commitment to review and sign your child’s weekly "Read and Respond" forms. These forms help track their progress and emphasize the value we all place on consistent reading practice. Together, we can create a team effort that shows your child how much we care about their success!
In the spirit of February, a month of love and kindness, we’re also challenging students and families to “Spread Love to Others.” Whether it’s a kind note to a classmate, helping a neighbor, or simply sharing encouraging words, we can make a big difference in our community through small acts of kindness.
Thank you for being such an important part of your child’s learning journey and for continuing to support our school-home partnership. Let’s make February a month filled with reading, connection, and positivity!
Warm regards,
Jennifer Eichmeier

ATTENDANCE MATTERS
KEEP IN TOUCH
Call the Madison Attendance Hotline at 920-663-9730 on days that your child will not be attending school. The hotline is automated and operates 24 hours a day. Failure to notify our main office means that your child's absence is considered unexcused and subject to truancy policies.
EXCUSED ABSENCE LIMIT
MPSD recognizes a maximum of 10 partial or whole days of excused absences per school year. Excused absences include illness, funerals, vacations and doctor's appointment. All absences beyond these 10 days are considered unexcused, unless a doctor's note is provided to the Madison attendance secretary.
HABITUAL TRUANCY
The State of WI identifies a student as a habitually truant when they are absent from school for 5 or more days in a semester without an acceptable excuse. Students with 5 or more unexcused absences can be issued a citation totaling $439.
UP AND AT 'EM
Breakfast is served in the gym from 7:45-8:05am. If your students plan to eat breakfast, please have them enter though the gym doors during the time listed above. If students are not eating breakfast, students can enter the building beginning at 8:00 am. At 8:10am the school day begins and attendance is taken shortly after. Arriving to school late can make children feel rushed and anxious, which is not a good way to start their day. Sometimes this increases the likelihood of students displaying behaviors. In addition, children can miss out on social interaction, community-building and core instruction.
Library News
Students have been enjoying library time by listening to stories, learning how to use Chromebooks, learning how the library works and spot light authors.
If something happens to a book at home please still return it. I can try to fix it or order a new copy. DO NOT send money to school. While it is much appreciated, we no longer fine at the elementary level for lost, damage or misplaced books
Make sure your students return their library books when they are done with them. Students can only have 3 books checked out at a time. Students who forget to bring their books back sometimes get sad or upset because they cannot check out anymore so getting in the routine of returning them is crucial to help prevent this from happening.
Thank you,
Amber Bohman
Youth Art Series Reception
Good Morning MPSD Administrators and Leaders,
I am cordially inviting you to attend Manitowoc Public School District's annual Youth Art Series Reception on Sunday, March 2nd from 1:00pm-4:00pm at the Rahr West Art Museum.
This is a causal celebration to recognize MPSD's outstanding artistic students and participants. Since 1951, our community has celebrated Youth Art Month in March through the long-standing tradition of partnering with our local Rahr West Art Museum to showcase the artistic achievement and talent of our student artists.
The dedicated MPSD art department continues to collaborate with the Rahr West to display over 800 artworks from our K-12 students, including international Kamogawa students through our Sister-City program. We also team together with Lamar Advertising and Nicolet Bank to promote our Youth Art Series program through student designed billboards that are located throughout the community to promote and raise awareness for Youth Art Month.
Please consider celebrating with us and being a part of this unique event! The MPSD Youth Art Series exhibition is the highest attended event put on by the Rahr West! This is a great opportunity to support your school community, the talented student artists, and dedicated art department staff.
Respectfully,
Cassie LaPean-Klein

The Reading Corner
Greetings Madison Families,
We want to celebrate receiving “Exceeds Expectations” on our Governor’s Report Card. This shows that Madison Elementary School is truly a school of excellence. We want to continue this positive momentum by encouraging your families to continue reading outside of school. Our goal is for every Madison student to read for 20 minutes 4 nights a week. Please be on the hunt for our Read and Response form in your child’s backpack. Your partnership with this is much appreciated!
