Mustang Flyer
February 13, 2025
~ Notes From Mrs. Richardson ~
It's one of my favorite times of the year! Each February our staff nominates dedicated teachers and professional employees to represent our school as Teacher of the Year and Professional Employee of the year. Our finalists underwent interviews and observations and we will announce the final winners next week! In the meantime, please join me in congratulating our three Teacher of the Year Finalists:
Liz Azimzadeh (3rd grade)
Kendal Harlow (special education)
Ginger Bartlett (4th grade)
as well as our Professional Employee of the Year Finalists
Abdul Abutunis (head custodian)
Esmeralda Dominguez (paraprofessional)
Alex Foster (MTSS/504 coordinator)
We are fortunate to have some of the BEST here at MPE and I'm excited to celebrate them!
~ School Announcements ~
Media Center Renovation
As a part of the district's Capital Plan 2027, MPE will be undergoing a major media center renovation, with construction beginning shortly after the last day of school. In addition to new shelving and furniture, the physical space is being completely rebuilt with walls torn down, collaboration spaces and a projects lab being built, and more! We have been directed by the district to shut down operations of the media center to begin the pack up of books and materials on March 1. The final day for student checkout is tomorrow, February 14. Specials classes for Kindergarten and 1st grade will continue through the end of the school year, but students will not be able to check out books. We know this minor inconvenience will pay off when we kick off the school year with a beautiful new space for learning, reading, and technology.
We are seeking volunteers to help with the library pack up process. Please visit the link below to sign up to volunteer.
GA DOE Student Surveys (Grades 3-5)
We are writing to inform you about a new student survey that will be conducted at your child’s school. The survey, which will be open from February 3 through March 31, includes 27 questions. It should take students approximately 10 minutes to complete, and it asks about the quality of teaching and learning, the school environment, support for students, and how commonly students in the school face challenges (such as being bullied). Names cannot be tied to survey answers in any way, and students can skip any question. The data will help leaders improve the school.
The Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA), 20 U.S.C. § 1232(c)(1)(A) gives you the right to review a copy of the student survey questions. You may review the survey questions at this link. Additionally, you may request that the school provide a copy of the survey questions for your review.
The PPRA also gives you the right to opt your child out of participating in the survey. If you do not wish for your child to participate, please email Mrs. Richardson at richardsona3@fultonschools.org
PreK Lottery Registration
The lottery application for the 2025-2026 Pre-Kindergarten Lottery will close on March 5. Mountain Park does not currently house a GA-PreK program, but families living in the MPE zone can apply for lottery at nearby schools. Please view the documents below for additional information.
Innovation Academy Summer STEM Camp (Grades 3-5)
Dear Families,
We are excited to explore the possibility of offering a Summer STEM Camp to provide hands-on learning experiences for students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Healthcare. As part of our commitment to serving the needs of our community, the Innovation Academy Foundation is gathering feedback from families like yours to ensure that this opportunity is designed to best support your child’s interests, schedule, and learning goals.
This camp would provide students with the opportunity to engage in real-world problem-solving, explore different STEM fields, and experience hands-on activities in a fun and interactive environment. However, we want to hear from you—what timing, topics, and price ranges would work best for your family?
Please take a few minutes to complete our interest survey by February 21:
👉IA Foundation STEM Camp Interest Form
Your feedback will help us create a camp that is accessible, engaging, and tailored to meet the needs of our students. Whether your child is interested in engineering, coding, healthcare, or general STEM exploration, we want to provide meaningful experiences that inspire curiosity and learning beyond the school year.
Thank you for your time and support in shaping this opportunity for our students. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Avery White at whitea10@fultonschools.org.
We look forward to hearing from you!
Sincerely,
Scott Kent

Wait Until 8th
Exciting news, everyone! We’re launching the Wait Until 8th campaign at MPE!
This initiative encourages families to delay giving their kids smartphones until at least the end of 8th grade. Together, we can reduce the pressure on our children and help them thrive in a more distraction-free environment. The pledge becomes "active" once 10 or more families from the same grade sign up, which means you won’t be alone in this commitment. Join us in saying “not yet” to smartphones and give our kids a few more years to grow and explore!
Ready to join the movement? Check out the link https://www.waituntil8th.org to sign the pledge! Also, join our Facebook group to interact with like-minded MPE parents. Let’s do this together!
School Attendance Communication
When your child is absent from school due to illness or an appointment, please be sure to send an excuse note to mpeattendance@fultonschools.org. This will ensure our attendance office receives your excuse and can update your student's record accordingly. Remember that teachers can only mark students absent or present and cannot update absences. Absences will be updated within a few days of the excuse note being sent. I realize that the attendance letters detailing number of days absent can be unsettling. Please note that these are sent automatically from the district. Although they do have my name in the signature line, they are not from me. I do not send them or know when they are being sent. I am happy to help clear up any discrepancies found in your child's attendance record. Please feel free to reach out to me at any time for assistance at richardsona3@fultonschools.org.

Remember, you must submit all transportation changes using the app. The default transportation will be how they normally go home. If your student normally goes home a certain way, there’s no need to enter it on that day. Plan changes are only for when it differs from the default plan. Also, if you need a carpool or walker number, email andersons5@fultonschools.org or call the front office. Thanks so much!

Creative Minds Club
In the Creative Minds Art Club, we champion the artist in everyone. Our mission is to inspire confidence in artistry and reveal the magic of creation.
Students will come into a WORKING ARTIST STUDIO where they will learn techniques for their OWN creations. Some projects will be teacher-led, but the goal is to allow students to find their inspiration and create from there — we value process and experimentation over final products, because that’s where real learning and creativity lie.
Classes are limited to 10 so that each student receives 1:1 time working on their projects.
In the Creative Minds Art Club, it’s more than just an art project, you'll leave with a sense of accomplishment and newfound confidence. Link - https://paulambrett.com/creativeminds-art-club
