Muskrat Newsletter
DECEMBER 2024
Muddy Creek Families,
Keep in mind that while students are excited for some time off this month, it can also lead to some anxiety about not seeing friends or losing familiar routines/connections. It's a great time to grab a cup of tea or cocoa with your littles and check in on how they are feeling with some of the uncertainty heading their way.
Wishing you all a warm and safe season,
Principal Danforth
From the Office...
🌲 Please have your student check the Lost and Found. ALL UNCLAIMED ITEMS WILL BE DONATED ON 12/3!

Winter Sing-A-Long, December 5th @ 6pm
PTO will have hot dogs, cocoa, cookies, juice boxes and more for sale starting at 5:30. Students should arrive by 5:45, and the performance will begin at 6pm sharp!
Bullying Prevention Campaign
From November 4th to 15th, MCCS School Counselor Jill Hein visited every classroom to lead a dynamic Bully Prevention Unit, empowering students to recognize, report, and refuse bullying! Each class participated in 2-4 engaging lessons, leaving our school community stronger, more united, and ready to take a stand.
The 5th graders even took a pre-and-post-test, showing an incredible leap from 70% to 92% in their understanding of bullying prevention traits—true future leaders in action! Thanks to these efforts, the Muskrats have built a safer, kinder school where everyone can thrive. Way to go, Muddy Creek!
Classroom Shout-Outs
The More We Get Together...
The kinders and their 3rd grade buddies have been exploring the power of kindness and friendship. They created a beautiful Friendship Quilt together, and Kinder sang "The More We Get Together" at the last all-school assembly!
Budding Writers in 1st!
In 1st we have looked at all the steps for writing and have practiced most of them. We will practice revising and editing our work often so that we can publish our best work and share with others. In December, we are focusing on gingerbread stories and you may even see a published story from the kids soon!
Getting Cultured in 2nd
Second graders visited the Museum of Natural and Cultural History in Eugene and learned how the Kalapuya people and other members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde harvest and prepare camas roots for consumption.
3rd grade & Kinder buddies visited Rain Dance
There they saw 2 barn owls, participated in a scavenger hunt for native plants and animals, explored Oak habitat and learned how to draw a traditional Kalapuya Longhouse. During the trip and upon return, they dissected oak galls and collected data on what they found inside.
Musical Mastery in 4th & 5th
4th grade spent time rehearsing for our winter sing a long. Students are learning best posture and form when performing. When you look good, you feel good, and sing even better! 5th grade is practicing a xylo-surprise to showcase for a future winter all school meeting... stay TUNED for the fun.
Students becoming the Teachers!
Ceramics in the Art Room
The students wrapped up stage one of ceramics last week and we’re back to open studios. Kids enjoyed 3D cardboard building, collage and drawing and while painting was open, no one decided to indulge—which is 100% okay! Soon we'll begin stage two of ceramics and get them all fired up!
Library Traditions
Every year, the week before Winter Break, 1st through 5th graders participate in the Winter Light Read-In. After checking out a book, each student receives a candle (battery operated of course!), finds a cozy spot, and we turn out the lights and read. It is by far the quietest Library period all year, and the most magical!
2nd Annual GagaBall Tournament
Our 5th grade team - with a little help from a couple former muskrats! - competed in the GagaBall Tournament hosted by Ashbrook Independent School. Also in the competition were Philomath Elementary, Philomath Middle School, and Zion Lutheran. Our team played hard and earned 3rd place!!
Equity, Inclusion, & Empowerment Subcommittee
The Equity, Inclusion, and Empowerment Committee is a subcommittee of the Inavale Community Partners (Muddy Creek Charter School) Board established to gather information, make recommendations, and inform the Board and MCCS stakeholders on issues related to:
- Equity – giving all students and staff a fair opportunity for success by meeting individual needs.
- Inclusion – systemic reform embodying changes to content, structures, and strategies so that everyone feels welcome, valued, respected, and supported.
- Empowerment – creating a culture where individuals from marginalized groups and those from groups with greater power gain a positive identity, appreciation for human diversity, and an education and professional growth that opens doors to new opportunities
The EIE Committee welcomes new members and individuals with expertise in drug and alcohol prevention, HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted disease prevention, and/or harassment and bullying prevention. We periodically seek input on policies related to these topics as we review and update related policies. Individuals with expertise in these areas who meet the membership criteria are welcome to inquire about serving as members and anyone with this expertise is welcome to inquire about volunteering to provide input on relevant board policies as needed. https://www.muddycreekcharterschool.org/icp/equity-inclusion-and-empowerment-committee/
