PTA News
November PTA meeting recap:
We had some great discussions at Monday’s PTA meeting.
- We discussed the changes to the Pizza Dinner from a cost per item fundraising model to a free/donation-based model.
- We approved a $330 grant for the purchase of materials for the 5th grade with a motion to also explore and come up with criteria for grant requests that are transparent to both the requestor and the PTA.
- We received an update from the 2nd grade team on the amazing things that our 2nd graders are learning. Ask your kids about their orthographic memories!
- Principal Behnke talked about Student Wellness week and shared other school updates.
- Mr. Schneider presented to the PTA about the need for new risers. Our current risers are unsafe, and the ones used for concerts are likely from the early 1990s. He asked for approximately $4000 from the PTA to pay 50% of the cost of new risers with the school covering the rest from the capital fund. Membership present (of which there was a quorum) made a motion to approve this request (to pay up to 50%) of the cost of the risers. This money will come out of our savings, not out of our annual budget. The motion passed and the risers will get ordered.
- We are looking for parents and caregivers to organize opportunities/spaces for family engagement - places for parents/caregivers to talk to each other without the formality of the PTA meeting. We welcome interested caregivers to work with us on developing a strategy and mechanisms to create this space for families. Please reach out to us at falconheightspta@gmail.com if you are interested in contributing to this work.
On behalf of the FH PTA board, I want to extend a big thank you to everyone who is giving us feedback on how things are going, where we're getting things right, and where we are not. We really appreciate the energy and care that folks bring to these conversations. They are tough and worthwhile conversations. Thank you all for sticking with us and holding us accountable to our values as we figure things out. We are really looking at this year in particular as a transition year from how we've always done things, to how we want to operate in the future. We are all in this together, and we couldn't do this work without you!
All our best,
Lindsay, Maria, Deidre and Katie

From the Health Office
Vision Screening
Students will have their vision screened at the school next week in accordance with MDH guidelines. The screening will be performed by the school nurse using a photo screener. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the nurse (contact information below). If the screening is passed with no concerns, you will not hear back about the results. If the screening shows that a comprehensive eye exam is recommended, the results and the recommendation will be sent home with the student.
Please let the Health Office know if you do not wish for screening to be completed.
If finances are a barrier to obtaining an eye exam and/or glasses, please contact the school nurse for resources. If you have concerns about your child's vision and do not receive a follow up letter, please contact the nurse and results can be provided.
A school-wide hearing screening will not be performed. The school nurse can perform a hearing screening for your student at any time upon request.
Did you know?
Cavities (also known as caries or tooth decay) are the most common chronic disease of childhood in the United States1,, according to the CDC. Untreated cavities can cause pain and infections that may lead to problems with eating, speaking, playing, and learning. Children who have poor oral health often miss more school and receive lower grades than children who don’t. The good news is that cavities are preventable. Have your child brush teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste. Monitor your child’s brushing to ensure good technique. Visit the dentist regularly. Drink tap water that contains fluoride.
