Observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday
On November 2, 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed the King Holiday Bill into law, designating the third Monday in January a federal holiday in observance of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The legislation to recognize Martin Luther King Jr. Day was first introduced just four days after his assassination on April 4, 1968. Still, it would take 15 years of persistence by civil rights activists for the holiday to be approved by the federal government and an additional 17 years for it to be recognized in all 50 states. Today, it is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer and improve their communities.

DHS in Action!
AP Biology Classes
Mrs. Buckner's AP Biology classes engaged in a Tea Party. The students had to determine how taste receptors work. The tea is made from the Indian herb Gymnema sylvestre. This tea has a profound but reversible effect on the sense of taste. Their task was to determine what effect Gymnema has on taste perceptions and come up with a mechanism that explains this effect.
Drivers Education Classes
Students in Coach Martinez' and Coach Harris' classes used a car driving simulator to experience what it’s like to be in the driver’s seat and make important, everyday road decisions from behind the wheel. They watch the rules of the road in action as they explore various driving situations.
Film and Television Classes
Students in Mrs. Patrick's first year Film and Television class edited their “How-To” video projects in collaborative groups. They are teaching how to do various tasks such as making slime, paper airplanes, cake pops and other fun topics of their choice.
Graphic Arts Classes
Culinary Arts Classes
Chef Robison’s culinary students showcased their skills as they carefully prepared a deep-dish apple crumb pie. The students were engaged in peeling and slicing fresh apples, blending spices, and layering the fruit into a buttery crust. Crumbly, golden-brown topping was sprinkled over the pie with precision, creating a picture-perfect dessert. Smiles and teamwork shine through as students proudly present their finished pies, embodying creativity, collaboration, and the joy of baking.
