News from Across the Seventh Grade
- Students are learning about Photosynthesis in Mrs. Roberts-Prior's science class.
- Here they are practicing what they learned by competing in an escape room. Groups answer questions at different levels and the first group to finish all the questions wins.
- "Book talks about The Outsiders in ELA" --Alyssa S.
- "Reading The Outsiders in Mrs. Edward's class" --Annie O.
- "Reading The Outsiders with Mrs. Edward" --Ari W.
Mrs. Edward's accelerated ELA classes had a great time reading the YA classic, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. We fell in love with the characters and even took personality quizzes to find out which greaser we are--some of the results were pretty surprising! The book has allowed us to examine how literature can reinforce and combat stereotypes about people in poverty and how that might influence what we think about the book's place in our curriculum.
Reading is such an important skill and a wonderful way to learn about different cultures. All of Mrs. Edward's classes are working on Reading for Culture projects. Students self-selected books that are by and about people with different lived experiences, and by the end of the quarter, they will choose a creative project to showcase what they have learned.
- First, students worked in small groups on an inquiry project comparing the parts of cells to some other thing. We went on a scavenger hunt around the school to first acquaint us with cell analogies - learning that Mr. Moring is like the nucleus of the cell - the boss of the school is like the boss of the cell!
- Then students created their own analogies. Plant and animal cells were compared to things like fish tanks, hospitals, football stadiums, and more!
- Currently, we are studying how cells make energy through cellular respiration. We are exploring the relationship between cellular respiration and exercise and tracking how fast our bodies make carbon dioxide waste - a sign we are actively making energy (ATP) - which we can track when the water turns from blue to yellow! Exciting times in seventh grade science!!!
- We asked our seventh graders to share something they've done this year that they are proud of, and below are a few of the things we received. If you would like to see more of what students have been up to at the Doughty School this year, please join us for JFDS Showcase Night at 6:00 pm on Thursday, March 13. We look forward to seeing you there!
- In Mrs. Brown's classes students are currently collaborating on an ABC book for younger students about Black History Month.
- Each student is responsible for one page of the book highlighting an important figure. So far, we have almost 65 pages highlighting different people, and we're adding more pages by the day!
- Our plan is to "publish" a copy of our book so it can be in our school library.
- According to social studies students in Mr. Haskins’ seventh-grade classes, they have a lot in common. Students recently completed a unit on the New Nation—the period following the American Revolution through the early 1800s—where they wrote a new chorus to “I Want it That Way” about the infamous XYZ Affair during the Adams Administration. Mr. Haskins challenged them to sing the new chorus and how did they do? Let’s just say, Mr. Haskins did most of the singing, and yes, they did feel sorry for him. Ha!
- In eighth grade, students were mired in the muck of Watergate, as they worked together to examine the reliability of Nixon’s claims about Watergate and John Dean’s testimony, where he implicated Nixon’s involvement in the infamous cover up. Their next adventure will include all-things civics by diving into naturalization—the process of becoming a US citizen.
- Seventh grade students were asked to share the one thing they have learned this year. Here is a sampling:
All seventh graders take Maine Studies with Mrs. Brown! In Maine Studies we have...
- created models of Maine's historic industries using legos!
- looked at different skulls and pelts of Maine Animals and worked together to identify each!
- learned how to identify different types of animal tracks in the snow!
- used bird books to learn about Maine's birds and learned 10 common bird calls we could hear in our backyard!
- read Lost on a Mountain in Maine and learned wilderness survival skills!
- planned "road trips" to see different sights in Maine!
Cross Town Hoops
- The 2025 edition of Cross Town Hoops was another great one. The Doughty A Boys team brought home the gold ball (literally) and the other teams battled valiantly against our friendly rivals.
- Thanks to Dr. Chadbourne, Mr. Missbrenner, & the rest of the WSCS staff for hosting a terrific event.
Chronic Absenteeism - Did You Know?
- Chronic absenteeism occurs when a student misses 10% of the days that they are enrolled in school. In Bangor, for a student attending the entire school year, chronic absenteeism would be 17 days or an average of approximately two days per month. Chronic absenteeism is based on total absences - both excused and unexcused. We look forward to meeting our school goal of 95% attendance by June 2025!
