A Message from the MUHS Leadership Team
Dear MUHS Community,
In a week when people were running low on sleep and high on emotion, we want to appreciate how our students and staff navigated conversations across difference and maintained a sense of kindness and connection. Once again, we are so grateful to be part of the MUHS community.
Wishing you all a restful fall weekend.
Warmly,
Caitlin Steele, Principal

Announcements
Early Release on Wednesday
Wednesday, November 13 is an early release day. School lets out at 12:40. The abbreviated schedule is linked below.
Mock Election
On Monday, November 4, students participated in a schoolwide mock election. They voted on both national and statewide elections. A record breaking 60% of students voted! Research shows that students who practice voting are more likely to vote in real elections. Thanks to everyone who participated!
MUHS Is Hiring
MUHS is a wonderful place to work, and we are hiring. For the spring semester, we need a math teacher and a science teacher (both temporary positions). Additionally, we are looking for a Data Systems Manager. For this permanent position, the ideal candidate could begin this school year or next. Please reach out with any questions, and help us spread the word.
You can find a full list of open positions in ACSD here.
Academics
You’re Invited to the Grade 10 Personal Project Exhibition!
Mark your calendars for Thursday, December 12, 2024. Grade 10 students will be presenting their Personal Projects in the MUHS gym for students, families, and other members of our community between 1:30-2:30. It will be a lot of fun! Please feel free to drop in; you do not have to stay the whole time. It’s amazing to talk to students and hear about what they learned about and accomplished. Below are several photos from last year’s exhibition.
Language Acquisition
Ms. Bailey’s Spanish 2 class enjoyed a mock market day on Wednesday, October 30th. Students used their food and market vocabulary to sell and purchase items from a variety of stores. Students were very engaged and maintained Spanish the whole time, minus a few minor incidences, which cost them 5 pesos from the Spanish police (Ms. Bailey):)

Vermont Energy Education Program
Sharing this update from VEEP:
"Vermont Energy Education Program helps Vermont students, teachers, and school communities build a deep understanding of energy and climate with interactive workshops, equipment, professional development opportunities and action programs.
For high school students interested in action projects, the Youth Climate Leadership Academy offers support, and can award small grants for projects. In early December, high school teams from VT and NH have an opportunity to spend a weekend together and get support for their project ideas. Please let your engaged high school students know about this opportunity ASAP, as registration is happening NOW."

Naviance Information Session for Grade 11 Students
On Thursday, November 7, the MUHS School Counseling team gave a presentation to 11th grade MUHS students on using Naviance. Naviance is a web-based career, and college planning program that all of our MUHS students will use at different points throughout high school. Students use Naviance to create college lists, research career information, prepare resumes, and request transcripts and recommendations as they apply to college and employment opportunities. Naviance includes individualized information such as career inventories, standardized testing information, and grade point averages (GPAs). Students were emailed account and log in information, and will have a second Naviance workshop during advisory next Thursday, 11/14, to explore the site and take a career interest inventory. Students are asked to reach out to their school counselor with any questions!

When to Stay Home
We continue to see a variety of illnesses affecting students and staff at school including respiratory illness and gastrointestinal illness. Below are some reminders of our recommendations if staff or students are ill. We appreciate all efforts to minimize the spread of illness in our schools!
We ask students and staff to stay home with any potentially contagious illnesses or symptoms including the following:
Vomiting/diarrhea-must be 24 hours symptom free before returning to school
Fever 100.4 or greater -home until fever free without use of medication for 24 hours
Any infection requiring antibiotic-keep your student home until they have been on antibiotics for 24 hours
Persistent cough that disrupts normal activity other than an asthma related cough
Unexplained rash-may return once evaluated by a healthcare provider and rash is not contagious or no longer contagious
Influenza, colds, COVID-stay home until fever free without medication for 24 hours feeling well enough to be at school
Any other symptoms or illness that impedes a student’s ability to learn or staff’s ability to work.
There is no longer any isolation/quarantine requirement for COVID. If you suspect your student has COVID, please follow the guidelines above for all illnesses. Our schools no longer test for COVID or have COVID tests available to send home. Free COVID tests are available at the Ilsley Library and Middlebury Rescue.
Your student should see a healthcare provider for a cough that is not improving, shortness of breath, wheezing or other abnormal breathing, sore throat that does not improve, fever 105 or higher or a fever of 100.4 or higher that lasts more than 3 days.
Increased Incidents of Pneumonia
Our community is experiencing a trend of increased cases of Mycoplasma pneumonia, especially in children, that is being experienced nationwide. Here is some more info about this type of pneumonia including symptoms, who is at risk and prevention strategies:
Learn about M. pneumoniae symptoms such as fever, headache, and a slowly worsening cough. Stay aware of who might be at higher risk of severe disease, including people with asthma or reactive airway disease.
Protect yourself and others by following core prevention strategies to prevent spread of M. pneumoniae and other respiratory germs.
Seek medical care if you or your child has persistent or worsening symptoms of possible M. pneumoniae infection, such as wheezing or difficulty breathing, especially if you or they might be at higher risk of developing severe disease.
